William is nearly 18 and Autistic.
Last night my husband and I watched “The Accountant” for the second time, but it’s been many years.
Tonight we’re watching The Accountant 2.
If you haven’t seen it or heard of it, Ben Affleck plays an Autistic CPA, approximately in his 30’s, involved with dangerous people and I’ll leave it there.
It’s a great movie and if you know or are related to Autism, you’ll be amazed at how well portrayed it is. If you aren’t, it’s suspenseful, eye opening and Autism and the answers we receive VERY accurately portrayed.
They start the movie with a brief look at his back story of diagnosis, a mom who wants to get him help, a military dad who feels the opposite of what the therapist is suggesting to help him.
William is so much older now than watching it the first time.
I was amazed at the traits, stims, necessity for consistency, self injury, social awkwardness, brutal honesty, medications etc as an adult etc that we have seen over the years, and now, with William.
The character even had an original Jackson Pollack painting he received as “payment” for his services - We have a Jackson Pollack made by William in school a few years ago.
Jackson Pollack was diagnosed with bi-polar disorder.
I now understand the correlation to the artist and our special kiddos.
Autism doesn’t go away because a number changes your status.
It continues with commitment to advocate and guide in a way your Autistic learns and thrives. Right through the rest of their lives.
I encourage you to watch the movie.
Not only is it a great movie, but another way to understand Autism from childhood to adult and how hard this community, especially our kiddos, work to support themselves and learn coping skills with consistent hard work against many odds.
