Canaan Animal Sanctuary

Canaan Animal Sanctuary We are a 501c3 non profit organization working to save and improve the lives of animals everywhere.

We are a nonprofit 501(c)3 charitable organization, comprised entirely of volunteers who are dedicated to saving animals lives. Our mission is to provide assistance and sanctuary to animals in immediate danger or facing harm. To provide support to homeless, abused or unwanted pets, while attempting to find loving, forever homes. Also, to promote spay and neuter programs, therefore helping to alleviate the perpetual cycle of unwanted pets, unnecessary euthanasia, and overcrowded shelters.

It’s always hard to watch as they age and move into the last phases of life.
Their steps begin to be a bit more challenged, cloudiness covers their eyes so vision is not clear and sleeping much more is normal.

Fortunately, little Spock is still enthusiastic about eating and still has a little s***k left in him.

He had a nasty ear infection, but he’s feeling much better now with treatment.

I know we may be getting closer to the time we need to say goodbye, but for now we will continue enjoying the next weeks/ months, and with any luck, the next year with him!❤️

We are still fighting for Hunter!🙏🏼💔😢

April 6th must be a very busy day for our rescue. Six very important memories have popped up today.

This one has been a thorn in my side for nearly three years!

Princess made it to us and has been adopted. She is pictured with one of our very reliable and trustworthy fosters in San Antonio. She is not the woman mentioned in the post.

Poky finally made it to Ohio and is still with the rescue.

Hunter was not as lucky. He was stolen by the foster and we filed a civil suit to regain custody. We received a judgement against her, but when the constables went to her residence they found she had been evicted and had left with all of the animals.

We have since hired two other attorneys and a receiver to try to find this woman.

I have learned that she has done this with at least two other rescues since then, one of which currently has a civil suit filed against her. She has also been banned from fostering from a local shelter in the Dallas/Ft Worth area.

How someone who continues to break the law and somehow continues to get away with it is beyond me!!!! Some may say why go through all of this for a dog? It is the principal! These animals deserve better and we need to be their voice! Not just when its easy to do so! I will continue to fight for what is right!

The laws exist to keep order, but are only good if enforced.

It has taken a toll on me, but I’m not giving up hope that one day we will meet little Hunter. I have prayed consistantly that he is still alive and well. 🙏🏼😢

Our little sweetpea, Peewee, came to us heartworm positive. The worse
case we have ever taken. The worms were large and had already caused damage to her heart, along with pulmonary hypertension. She had two blood clots as well as a misshapen heart. She was so fatigued that she wouldn’t or couldn’t stand for very long.

Peewee was placed on nearly a half dozen meds and we prayed she would be strong enough to make it it through the treatment.

Not only did she survive, but she began to thrive. She started playing, barking excitedly and running, like she wasn’t capable of before.

Recently she has begin coughing which made us worry and wonder if she could be going into heart failure.
Her last visit to the cardiologist went well without much change, but with this much heart damage things can change very quickly.

She was also pawing and scratching her mouth. Probably a bad tooth or two, but we are hesitant to put her under anesthesia with her heart issues. So we went for another exam and radiographs which were sent to her cardiologist.

Happy News!!! ❤️🙏🏼

We heard back Yesterday that he doesn’t believe she is in heart failure, but if the coughing continues to worsen a course of prednisone may be warranted.

In the meantime, we have started some additional cardio support supplements as well as her omega 3’s.

Peewee is a fighter and we plan on helping to make the fight as easy as possible for her for as Long as she wants to continue.

For now, she is enjoying life and all it has to offer!!!

No, we haven’t dropped off the face of the earth. I have spent several weeks trying to access fb after getting a new phone.

We are trying to play catch up now, so I wanted to start with a happy and positive post.

One of our wonderful volunteers/adopters, and friends brought us Christmas in March. Due to all of our crazy and hectic schedules we weren’t able to do the customary December gifts for the animals.

Thank you Alexis, and the dogs went crazy for the Three Dog Bakery cookies as always!🩷💙

We had to say goodbye to our sweet, dear Sully last night. He fought the good fight, but he was tired and the battle became too much.

We had the pleasure of having Sully in our lives for nearly 9 years. He was FIV positive, but lives a good life up until the last couple of weeks. He had developed CKD which we were treating with daily Subq fluids, , phosphate binder, renal diet along with supplements which had to be syringe fed because he wouldn’t eat, cerenia to help with nausea and an appetite stimulant .

For a few days I thought we had begun to see improvement, but sadly it was short lived.

Yesterday we returned for bloodwork and although a few things looked better his wbc count had doubled from the already high numbers from two weeks ago. Even after two rounds of antibiotics which proved we were dealing with some type of cancer as well.

I’m so grateful for the kindness and patience Dr Hollie and staff has shown to me throughout this ordeal and every single one before it.

Sully had one meet and greet in his nine years with us and I’m not sure why they decided not to adopt other than the FIV. He was the sweetest, most gentle and friendly boy and I will miss everyday without him!💔😢

Update: His bloodwork came back and is not good. It looks like he may be in kidney failure and with such a high white blood cell count, he may have cancer secondary to the FIV.
He is still alert and responding to me. Walking around and jumping on furniture, so we will continue the course. If he starts to further decline we may be forced to make that heartbreaking decision to give him peace. 😔🙏🏻
………………………………………………………………….
Sully came to us many years ago after being contacted by a Good Samaritan. His family lived on campus and when they moved out they had just put him outside and left him behind.

Sully has such a wonderful personality that he would just greet everyone which added to his problems because some local children began throwing rocks and trying to hit him with sticks.

When ran that evening to pick him up and he’s been with us all these years.
Sadly he was tested and found to be FIV positive. We began a healthy diet and Lysine.

It’s catching up with him now. He stopped eating a few days ago and he received a sit of antibiotics, cerenia and eye meds for the discharge. We are syringe feeding and giving subq fluids along with an appetite stimulant. Still awaiting blood test results.

He is an older guy and this disease isn’t kind, but we are hoping and praying we can get him over this hurdle and give him much deserved time to enjoy life a little longer.

🙏🏻💙
