Little Miss Fairy finally got to go on a walk around the property!

She’s been on the back burner pretty much since I got her, with the occasional session here or there, but nothing consistent. While this isn’t great from a training standpoint, it’s allowed her to settle in and get used to the routine and daily activity around here.

She took the walk around better than 90% of my training horses do the first time and enjoyed munching on some nice grass. She also learned how to take alfalfa pellets out of my hand today, which might have created a monster🙈 she was pretty in my pocket looking for more goodies afterwards, but she’ll learn treat boundaries in time.

I’m really enjoying the luxury of not having a timeline to follow with her, being able to go at our own pace, and enjoy the journey. I got so burned out with competition mustang timelines that I forgot how fun gentling mustangs can be.

Reminder that this sweetie will be looking for her new home sometime in the future!

Fall Horse Festival 2026

When Tammy at Riverwind Ranch first asked me to do liberty demos during the Fall Horse Festival, I hesitated. I’m quite the introvert and the thought of talking in front of people was quite terrifying. However, my New Year’s Resolution for this year was to step outside of my comfort zone, so I said yes, and I’m so glad I did! Thank you for inviting me to come out Tammy!

I took Arrow on Saturday and, while I was very nervous, I think things went pretty well! I came home with a lot of takeaways and made a game plan with some changes for Sunday’s demo.

Unfortunately, Arrow came in lame at dinner time Saturday night, so I made the decision to sub in Calista for Sunday’s demo. I haven’t done a ton of off line work with her and it was only her third time going somewhere by herself, but I knew she’d be up for the task.

She was so very good and tried very hard. She nailed her in hand work and showed how to recover when your horse leaves on a circle. I was so proud that she didn’t get overly worried and that she felt pretty relaxed in a new environment. She even asked for some cuddles when we got back to the trailer, which is fairly rare for her since she’s not a big touchy-feely type.

I got to sit in on some educational demos about bridle/bit fit and equine nutrition while I was there and learned quite a bit! I’m going to be making a few changes in some things now that I’ve been educated and had a chance to further research. Never stop learning!

I got to meet and talk to some great people at/after my demos and had some great conversations! Thank you to everyone for coming out and watching!

Sunset is my favorite time of day.

It’s a time of transition. Day turns into night. The sun sets in one direction and the moon rises in the other. The air gets cooler and crisper. The daytime noises quiet and everything is briefly silent and still before the night wakes up.

The sky lights up in the most beautiful colors; yellows, oranges, reds, pinks, purples, and blues. Some days clouds mute the colors, create a canvas for the colors to reflect off of, or are absent for the colors to shine uninterrupted. No two sunsets are ever the same; one gets to experience something completely unique and irreproducible every day.

The day is ending, memories and experiences fading into the background. Anticipation for the fresh start of the next day, with its own unique experiences, starts to brew.

I have spent nearly every sunset with Arrow this year and have taken a moment to appreciate almost every one. There have been a number of times my gaze has traveled west and I stopped and stared in awe at the beauty of it. The colors, clouds, and stillness bring a sense of peace I don’t experience anywhere else. And Arrow feels it too. He always feels the best around sunset, feeling peaceful yet powerful.

It’s hard not to reflect on how far we’ve come and all we’ve experienced the past 274 sunsets and think about how much more we’ll get to experience in the next 91 sunsets. Then we’ll get to experience an even bigger transition into a new journey around the sun, which will be filled with its own unique experiences, challenges, and dreams.

Maybe times of transition aren’t so bad after all. Maybe they happen to make us pause and reflect. Maybe they happen to make us be in the present. Or maybe they just happen to happen, without needing a reason. Regardless, I know where you’ll find me during my favorite transition of the day…

I’ve been dreaming of mirroring flying lead changes since I first saw Luke do them 2.5 years ago, but I didn’t think that I’d actually be able to train Arrow to do them. Well, here we are!

I’ve worked incredibly hard to not only teach Arrow the physical, but also the mental components to be able to do advanced mirroring lateral work such as flying lead changes and all of that work sure has paid off! I had briefly played with flying changes last year, but they were not going well and we had a lot more work ahead of us, so I went back and spent a LOT more time at the basics, refining and redefining almost everything I had taught him as well as continuing to teach him new concepts and maneuvers.

I just recently brought the idea of flying changes back up to Arrow and, while I think they are very hard and complex, he has found them relatively easy and quite fun! It’s been especially rewarding to see him staying so relaxed, soft, and feeling good mentally about something so complex!

I am so grateful for Luke’s guidance and support the past couple of years, guiding us through rough patches and celebrating our successes. I couldn’t ask for a better mentor or friend to be part of our journey!
