Boston, one of the sweetest horses you’ll ever meet. Boston came to us as an 11-year-old stallion back in spring of 2021, along with 6 other horses from the same residence that needed help (including one other stallion). With no creativity on our part, we called the group the “Lucky 7”, a group name for ease of being able to refer to them. As we got all the horses everything they needed, getting Boston gelded as soon as possible was top priority. Unfortunately, Boston’s feet were absolutely shot from long-term neglect and needed a lot of rehab. From having a little rotation to extremely thin soles was quite a challenge, but he eventually came through the other side of that. Wow, the boots we went through during that period. It wound up being quite a bonding period with so much handling daily, and Boston grew to absolutely love people and craved attention from people. Boston is also club-footed and through his rehab and evaluations, Boston also had a ligament surgery to try and help that. The surgery did have a little success.
Boston did great through the other parts of his rehab as well, like learning how to be a good gelding and being integrated into a herd. This was done over a period of months, and Boston made so many good friends over that time. You would never know he was a stallion for 11 years.
Boston has been with MHWF for 5 years, and I’m here to tell you that something happened that we never really thought would happen – Boston got adopted! Geez, I’m tearing up just writing this, happy tears. Our wonderful veterinarian, Dr. Suzanne, is the vet for the 2 horses that reside at the Wisconsin Deer Park in the Dells (they’ve been around for 50+ years), and they needed a horse for companion to their other horse who lost her pasture mate. Boston now resides there and is loving the attention of visitors and getting crackers from them.
Dr. Suzanne’s daughter, Rylee, had fallen in love with Boston over the years of seeing him every vet day a couple times a year and always wanted to adopt him, but they just didn’t have room for him. Now he lives right down the road from him and she gets to see him whenever she wants. This adoption was kept as a secret from her and Dr. Suzanne took her on what she thought was a routine visit to the Deer Park, and there was Boston! There were some happy tears shed, and I’m sharing a couple of pictures of Rylee with Boston for his official adoption day picture, one from recently at the MHWF farm and a couple when she met up with Boston at his new home. Robert, who is Boston’s main caretaker, is just going to love this boy, and Boston gets to keep the same equine vet he knows and loves! Boston is surely missed here, but we are so happy he is living a life of getting so much attention and doing what he loves best and does best, making people happy.
Thank you so much to Dr. Suzanne of Dells Equine Veterinary Service, LLC for setting this all up and finding Boston such an amazing home! Thank you also to the amazing vets that made up Boston's team over the years, including Dr. Le from UW Madison for doing Boston's surgery. Last but not least, thank you to all of you for making wonderful stories like this possible for the horses - wonderful things like this couldn't happen without you.
