On Thursday, May 21st, our current alternative learning session program with Reid Middle School students participated in an informative program presentation with Marjorie from Le Petit Ranch. Marjorie and her assistant brought along her Spanish rescue greyhounds, Yayi (brindle) and Ronya (tan), to discuss dog health, care, and dog bite prevention. Marjorie explained the background on the Spanish Greyhound breed, what they were bred for, and how they were used for racing. She also discussed the work to ban dog racing and how Yayi and Ronya were rescued from racing. The discussion covered the dogs' calm presence, their suitability as therapy dogs, and their characteristics, such as being odorless, not shedding, and having a long spine. The latter makes it uncomfortable for them to sit, so you would often see them in the prone position. Marjorie taught the students how to check their dogs' health, including gum color and f***l matter and how shape and color could indicate health issues. To end the learning segment, the students were able to participate in dog enrichment with Yayi and Ronya. We thank Le Petit Ranch for providing another valuable learning experience for our Reid students, sponsored by a grant from the Charles H. Hall Foundation to educate students on proper care and animal welfare.

Not long ago, we shared the adoption of Stripes, a mom cat who found a new home with Rosemary & family.๐Ÿ˜ป Recently, Rosemary updated us on how she's doing.

"Good morning, just wanted to let you know that Stripes, now 'Roxy' is doing very well. She is so sweet and has become a friend to our dog Abe. They are in the early stages of becoming lifelong buddies. The first pic is Roxy sitting on the top of my chair and relaxing just as my previous cat used to. She seems perfectly at home.
Thank you!" - Rosemary

Thank YOU Rosemary for choosing adoption and providing this beautiful girl with a loving home! ๐Ÿก

If you have an adoption update you'd like to share, please feel free to email us at [email protected] and we'll be sure to share it in a future post! ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿพ

Today we thank Noah -
Noah made and sold dog treats with his mom, Lara as his Bar Mitzvah project. He also asked people to donate monetarily or with supplies. He raised more than $1000. In his Bar Mitzvah speech, he gave a shout out to Berkshire Humane Society. When asked "Why Berkshire Humane Society?", Noah said, "Because I like dogs!" The family has an older dog at home. When Noah was 18 months old, he had a traumatic experience with a dog, but a neighbor's chocolate Labrador retriever won him over and desensitized him.

While at the shelter, Noah presented his donations to Community Outreach Coordinator Trish, and met with recently adopted pup Grizzly Bear and adoptable dog Glo.

Thursday - ๐Ÿพ๐Ÿพ

Canine caregiver and adoption counselor Simone shared these photos and story with us regarding Dasher and his new dad, with whom she spent a great deal of time working. Here's what she had to tell us.

"Dasher was officially adopted today (5/19) after being on trial for a few weeks. His adopter, Kiel, visited Berkshire Humane Society on three separate occasions prior to the trial to create a relationship with Dasher. Dasher displayed fear and reactivity towards men while at the shelter. He was very wary of Kiel during their first meeting and wouldn't go over to him at all. Kiel spent over an hour each visit earning Dasher's trust, tossing cookies and speaking to him softly while sitting on the ground. He was eventually able to walk him and feed him treats out of his hand. After the third visit, we felt comfortable sending Dasher on a trial so they could continue bonding in the home. Today, they are inseparable, and Kiel is working on Dasher's relationship with other men the same way he did. He has reported that Dasher is doing wonderfully. They go for daily walks in the woods, cuddle on the couch, and watch movies together, and Dasher has become best buds with Kiel's cat. Kiel saw something special in Dasher and believed they could become buds. Dasher is overcoming his fears and is doing amazingly with Kiel as his advocate close by his side!"

Some dogs just need the time, patience and willingness to help them adjust to life in a new home. This is one of those perfect examples. We are thrilled for Kiel and Dasher and wish them continued happiness in their new lives together. ๐ŸคŽ

Today, we thank Lori Lantz, a good friend of our volunteer Joanne, who crocheted ten kitty blankets for Berkshire Humane Society's May 'Kitten Shower'. Joanne presents the blankets to shelter manager Cheryl, and you can see the beautiful blankets draped along the edges of our crib. Many thanks to Lori for her donation to help support the need for necessary supplies during our ongoing kitten season!

Stray dogs being reunited with their owner(s) is far more common than cats, but today we share a very happy 'tail' for a lucky cat and his owner!

Maggie had recently moved from Stockbridge to Pittsfield and one day her black cat, Tony, a 2.5-year-old rescue, was missing. Unbeknownst to Maggie, Tony had travelled about a half mile from his new home, crossed busy South Street in Pittsfield and ended up in a hole at the bottom of a cement wall at the Pittsfield Commons shopping center.
Workers there called Pittsfield Animal Control Officer Kristin Quintal who brought the scared cat to Berkshire Humane Society.
Meanwhile, Maggie waited for Tony to come home. The second day of him missing, she made a post on Real Pittsfield Information page, where someone suggested she check with Berkshire Humane Society. She did, and it was indeed, Tony.
In her Facebook post, Maggie mentioned that Tony was shy. At the shelter, he hissed at adoption counselor Sam Klass, but when Maggie walked in, he turned on the charm, happily kneading and rubbing against her as she pet him in his holding cage. "That's when we know for sure [we've found the right owner], said Sam. "There's something about the reunion of a stray cat that is special. It doesn't happen super often, " he said. "I've done it with dogs a lot, but with cats, it's different."

Three days after going missing, Tony went home with Maggie. And if he ever gets out again, he'll return sooner because he now has a tiny microchip implanted under the skin between his shoulders. If he happens to get out and be found again, He can be turned in to Kristin, a veterinarian or Berkshire Humane Society, who can scan his back with a plastic wand, read the chip and reunite Tony with Maggie once again!
