🌎🐾 World Rabies Day — Prevention Starts With Vaccination 🐾🌎

Rabies is a deadly disease that can affect both animals and people, but it is also preventable through vaccination.

Just this past Friday, a client shared a story with us that is an important reminder of why rabies awareness matters. They found bats in their home and also discovered a suspicious bite mark on their arm. They immediately went to the emergency room, which was exactly the right thing to do. When there is a potential exposure to rabies, prompt medical evaluation is essential—even when the exposure may seem minor or uncertain.

Bat encounters can be especially concerning because their bites can be small and may not always be obvious. If you or your pet may have been exposed to a bat or another potentially rabid animal, avoid handling the animal yourself and contact a medical professional or your local public health department immediately.

As veterinarians, one of the most important things we can do to help prevent rabies is to vaccinate our pets. We strongly recommend keeping all dogs, cats, and other pets that are eligible for rabies vaccination up to date. Vaccination protects your pets and provides an important layer of protection for your family and community.

❤️ Vaccinate your pets. Protect your family. Help prevent rabies.

CUTEREBRA! 🐛🐛

Yesterday, we treated a dog at our clinic with a Cuterebra (botfly larva). We wanted to share this case to help pet owners recognize what these parasites can look like and know when to seek veterinary care.

Signs of a Cuterebra may include:
• A firm lump or swelling under the skin
• A small opening in the skin (used by the larva to breathe)
• Drainage from the site
• Excessive licking or scratching

If you notice a lump like this on your pet, don't squeeze it or try to remove it yourself. Improper removal can leave pieces behind and increase the risk of inflammation or infection. Your veterinarian can safely remove the larva and treat the area if needed.

Are your babies protected against fleas and ticks?

Now is the beginning of “flea and tick season” (even though they can survive all throughout winter). It is only the beginning of April and we have seen so many fleas and ticks on pets already this year!

We are offering annual testing for Heartworm, Lyme, Ehrlichia, and Anaplasmosis. Unfortunately we have diagnosed multiple cases already this year. Heartworms is carried by mosquitos but easily prevented with Heartgard! Lyme, Ehrlichia, and Anaplasmosis are tick borne diseases! All of which are also easily prevented by giving a monthly dose of Nexgard!

Enjoy the babies from the last couple weeks! 🫶🏻🐾
