The trip through the Squirrel Hill tunnels is always an amazing switch from the suburbs to the city.

There’s something almost mythic about rolling up to the Fort Pitt Tunnel. One moment you’re swallowed by this 1960s concrete time capsule, echoes of steel-mill commutes, smoky skies, and generations of Pittsburghers who learned to brake the second they see those red X’s.
The walls carry the history of a city that had to carve its way straight through a mountain just to keep moving forward. And then, on the other side, that legendary reveal: the whole skyline erupting into view like the curtain opening on Pittsburgh itself.
Every Pennsylvanian knows that split second, the switch from dark tunnel to golden bridges, from grit to glow. It’s the most Pittsburgh thing in the world: tough on the outside, breathtaking once you make it through.
