A treat here and there is part of the fun of having a pet. Keeping an eye on portions is part of keeping them around for a long time.

Pet Obesity Awareness Day is a good excuse to think about the extras: the pup cups, the table scraps, the "just one more" treat. None of that is off limits. The amount matters, and so does what the rest of the day's meals look like.

Curiosity and candy don't mix well on Halloween.

Chocolate, xylitol, and wrappers can all cause serious problems if your pet gets into the treat bowl, and busy nights with the door opening again and again make it easier for pets to slip out unnoticed. A little extra awareness goes a long way.

- Keep candy out of reach
- Watch the door during trick-or-treating, and
- Make sure your pet's ID and microchip info is up to date just in case
