Summer Safari: Zoorassic Park is in the history books! The food was delicious, the drinks were refreshing, and we ended the night dancing with a dinosaur. None of it would be possible without our sponsors. A special thank you for their generous support and helping our annual fundraiser become a roaring success!

Cheers to Summer Safari: Zoorassic Park! Here’s a little preview of our signature drinks, with a dino twist, for our most popular event of the year. Amber Elixir is a mix of Stateside Vodka with lemon and ginger. Or try the roaring good Raptor Refresher with white rum, cucumber, and mint.

You’ll be able to sample these refreshing cocktails at Summer Safari on Friday night. Don’t have a ticket yet? Get them here: https://ow.ly/byy850Z7Oov

Our little lion cub had a checkup today! Associate Veterinarians Dr. Lauren Kane and Dr. Ellis Wright gave the cub her eight-week exam on Thursday morning. Dr. Wright said the little cub has a spirited personality, calling her a “spicy firecracker.” She got a round of vaccines, a routine health check, and a clean bill of health. She will be due for some booster shots in the next few weeks. Learn more about the cub here: https://ow.ly/cwFI50Z7NjN

Dive into ocean conservation at the Zoo on June 8. We’re celebrating World Ocean Day with themed activities and events throughout the day at the Aquarium, Water’s Edge, and Kids Kingdom. Watch California sea lion and Humboldt penguin feedings, join a special story time with the author of “Peanut Butter and Jellyfish,” and learn how you can make a difference in protecting the world’s oceans.

Oceans cover more than 70% of the Earth’s surface. These incredible bodies of water face many threats, from pollution, habitat damage, overfishing, species loss, and coral reef bleaching. It’s vital we learn how to help our oceans by conserving water, ditching plastics, making smart seafood choices, and more. World Ocean Day is all about awareness and exploring these conservation opportunities. Learn more here: https://ow.ly/XlMw50Z7jN2

It’s Tongue Out Tuesday panda-monium! Check out these photos of our red panda taken by Zoo Photographer Clare Grant.

Red pandas, famous for their fluffy coats and long, bushy tails, are fascinating animals native to the high forests of Asia. They are an endangered species and legally protected in several Asian countries. Bamboo makes up 95% of their diet and they often select to eat the most nutritious leaf tips and tender shoots. They grow up so fast! Our little cub is making big strides as she is starting to eat meatballs! We captured the moment as she tried her first one. She’s obviously a big fan because she later stole the lion's share of her mom’s bone.

Lion cubs nurse from their mothers for up to a year; however, it is normal to see them weaned by 7-8 months of age. As part of the teething process, our keepers provide the cub with bones. Just like domesticated pets, bones help with unwanted chewing. Keep checking back for more updates on our lion cub. Learn more about her here: https://ow.ly/OOnG50Z6J7S

It’s a T.-riffic day to get prehistoric! That’s because June 1 is Dinosaur Day. The word dinosaur was coined in 1842 and comes from a combination of two Greek words – deinos, meaning “fearfully great,” and sauros, meaning “lizard.” Dinosaur fossils have been found on all seven continents.

From Triceratops to T. rex, more than 30 different animatronic dinosaurs are on display throughout the Zoo as part of Dinosaurs! at the Zoo. Like the terrible lizards, this exhibition’s time is limited. See them now through September 7.

Happy World Sea Lion Day! Did you know these incredible animals are pinnipeds, which is a word derived from Latin. “Pinna” means wing or feather, and “pedis” means foot.

California sea lions are one of the noisiest pinniped species. They spend a lot of time communicating with one another using alarm barks, growls, bleats, and roars. They use vocalizations both on land and in water. Visit the Zoo to see and hear our California sea lion colony at the Water’s Edge. Plan your visit here: https://ow.ly/ih1o50Z5NCG
