🐾 It’s National Wildlife Day and we’re taking a moment to celebrate all the beautiful animals here at the Zoo! This is a day to raise awareness and learn ways to support animal conservation efforts here at home and around the globe.

The Zoo’s conservation initiatives are on both a local and global scale, from a partnership with Tree Pittsburgh to the Association of Zoos & Aquarium’s Saving Animals from Extinction programs (SAFE). This Labor Day weekend, show some love for one of the animal kingdom’s hardest workers – the American beaver!

That includes the Junior Conservationists program for students in Grades 6-8. In this class, students become polar explorers learning about the Frozen Frontiers of the Arctic and Antarctic. From gorillas to orangutans, siamangs to sakis, and lemurs to tamarins, Primates is the third most diverse order of mammals after rodents and bats. There are more than 500 species of primates across the world! Amongst those species – humans!

This International Primate Day, we highlight the species that call our Zoo home.

Cotton-top tamarin
Ring-tailed lemur

Primates are facing a variety of threats in the wild, like habitat loss and animal trade, and many species are endangered or critically endangered. Some simple actions we can take to help include supporting habitat protection and climate action. Join us for a grand celebration at the Zoo on September 13! It’s Grandparents’ Day and we’re saluting all the special nanas, pap paps, mimis, and gramps out there.

On this special day, all grandparents who are accompanied by a grandchild of any generation will receive free Zoo admission. One grandchild can have several grandparents in attendance. We have many animals at The Islands and in the Aquarium that are native to beaches. But for National Beach Day, we're highlighting an animal you normally would not associate with the shoreline. Humboldt penguins are actually beach-dwelling birds. They don’t fly but they are excellent swimmers!

Humboldt penguins are native to the shores of Peru and Chile in South America. They like the nearby rocky seaside cliffs and come down to the beaches, sometimes needing to waddle through sunbathing sea lions, to get to the ocean for a swim. Enjoy these photos of our Humboldt penguins on the “beach” of their habitat in Kids Kingdom.

As the month winds down, we’re marking "August is for Antelope Month!"

Did you know our nyalas welcomed a calf earlier this summer? This antelope species is native to southeastern Africa. Dad Prince, mom Paprika, and baby Pepper are all now exploring the habitat at African Savanna together. As Pepper grows, his coat will darken and become shaggy from his chin to his stomach and along his back. Eventually, this little one will sport antlers just like his dad!

As we approach fall, you may be thinking about your end-of-year giving and your taxes - and the impact your dollars can make.
