Two brown pelicans, Joey and Felicity, are safely back at the Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium this evening with no injuries after leaving their habitat this morning.

Zoo staff are overjoyed and relieved that the birds are healthy, and deeply grateful for the community’s support during this event.

Public support was vital to the recovery effort. Using boats provided by Pittsburgh River Rescue and Three Rivers Waterkeeper, as well as support from the Army Corps of Engineers, the National Aviary, and over a dozen calls from members of the public, two Zoo teams constantly monitored both birds until they could be safely approached and recovered.

While both birds are free of injury, they will be receiving a thorough evaluation by the animal health team. They will be returning soon to their residence in Kids Kingdom with fellow pelican Pierre and their neighbors, the Zoo’s colony of Humboldt penguins.

The Pittsburgh Zoo & Aquarium is aware that two pelicans are currently outside of their habitat. Our animal care team is monitoring the situation and is actively working on their safe return. Animal safety and well-being remain our top priority. We will share additional information as it becomes available.

Update: The Zoo has established a pelican hotline to assist with monitoring the pelicans. We ask that members of the public do not approach, but please contact 412-365-2528 to share sighting information.

Update, 4 p.m.: We are delighted to announce that one pelican, Joey, has been safely rescued from the Allegheny River near Sharpsburg and has been returned to the Zoo for a health check.
Our second pelican, Felicity, is being monitored by our team and we are optimistic for her rescue, as well. Our teams continue to appreciate the support of the community during today’s event and welcome ongoing sighting reports to 412-365-2528. We will provide another update this evening.

Grumpy, grumbly, and gruff! On this National Grouch Day, we’re featuring Oscar, the tawny frogmouth. He’s got a permanent scowl, but don’t confuse these unique birds with owls. Tawny frogmouths are stocky with large heads. These nocturnal creatures are native to Australia. They are also masters of disguise in the daytime, perching low on tree branches and using their feathers to blend into the surroundings.

No Grouch Day parties for this cantankerous critter! We’ll just let Oscar get back to his nap!

It’s World Rainforest Week, and we’re kicking it off with a closer look at one of the world’s most distinctive rainforest dwellers. Siamangs live in the trees of Southeast Asia and are known for their deep booming and high-pitched vocalizations. They are endangered.

One of the biggest threats they face is habitat destruction. Conservation efforts are underway to stop the growing threat of unsustainably grown palm oil. This is where you can help!
