Fear can explain aggression but it doesnā€™t excuse it ā€œHeā€™s not aggressive, heā€™s just afraidā€ doesnā€™t actually change the behavior we have to deal with. Fear may be the emotion driving the behavior, but the behavior is still aggression if the dog is attempting to bite, attack, or seriously harm another dog or person. In behavior science, understanding why a behavior happens isnā€™t the same thing as saying the behavior is acceptable. Compassion means understanding that the dog is afraid. Accountability means teaching him what to do with that fear instead of allowing his fear to become everyone elseā€™s problem.

Learning that no means no is a valuable life skill. If every "no" became a "maybe if I keep pushing," we'd never learn boundaries or how to handle disappointment. Sometimes the healthiest thing we can learn is simply, "Okay, that didn't work. I'll try something else." That's not harsh, it's clarity.
