Mushrooms can be beneficial for pets (and humans) that suffer from allergies.

Some mushrooms can provide support for pets with allergies, including reishi and chaga, which contain triterpenes that can decrease the release of histamines. Histamines are released by immune system cells called mast cells, which are active during allergies. In addition, mushrooms contain beta-glucan compounds which can support immune system function.

When mushrooms are paired with CBD there is a synergistic effect. This means they are even more effective when used together.

Itchy pets are one of the most common things I help clients navigate, and it’s rarely just one simple cause.

While gut health plays a huge role, itching, chewing, and biting can also stem from pain or injury. Itching can be our pets way of attempting to self sooth. In some cases, therapies like massage or chiropractic care can make a big difference.

It’s also important to remember that true allergies are a sign of an overactive immune system, not a lack of medication. Supporting immune balance alongside gut health is key. After all, 80-ish percent of the immune system resides in the gut.

Here are some things to consider:

• Diet matters - Fresh, minimally processed food is ideal. Kibble is highly processed and can contain storage mites, which may worsen itching.
• Gentle detox support -Certain foods and herbs can help the body clear what it doesn’t need.
• Targeted probiotics - Not all probiotics are equal and not all are appropriate for every pet or situation.
• Skin microbiome support -Certain types of clean ingredient shampoos, sprays, and specific herbs can help restore balance on the skin.
• Immune support - CBD, medicinal mushrooms, and other herbs can support immune regulation.
• Omega 3 fatty acids such as those found in fish oil, can help with inflammation and nourish the skin and coat.

Every itchy pet is different, which is why an individualized approach matters.

Are you struggling to get to the root of your pets itching?

🐾DIY All-Natural Flea & Tick Spray for Dogs🐾

Looking for a simple, natural way to help repel fleas and ticks? Here's an easy recipe you can make at home with just a few ingredients that you probably already have.

**Ingredients:**
• 1 Lemon 🍋
• 2 tablespoons fresh thyme 🌱
• 2 cups water
• 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar

**Directions:**

1. Thinly slice the lemon and gently crush the rind to help release the natural oils.
2. Roughly chop the thyme and lightly crush it.
3. Add the lemon, thyme, and water to a pot.
4. Cover and simmer on very low heat for 60 minutes.
5. Allow to cool completely, then strain.
6. Stir in the apple cider vinegar and pour into a spray bottle.

**How to Use:**
Lightly mist your dog's coat up to twice a week, avoiding the eyes, nose, and mouth. Comb the spray through the coat with a flea and tick comb to distribute it evenly.

✨ **Bonus:** This spray may also help support dogs with mild ye**ty skin issues. In addition, this can be used on the humans in the household as well.

💚 **Storage Tip:** Since this recipe is water-based and doesn't contain a preservative, store it in the refrigerator and use it within 2 weeks. If you notice any change in odor, color, or cloudiness, discard it and make a fresh batch.

It's time to cook dog food for Scooby n Bella. I usually make three batches with different proteins and vegetables. I then freeze it and thaw as needed rotating between the batches. Variety is key to ensure they are receiving ample nutrients and it also supports good gut health. Even when feeding store bought food, it is best to rotate between a couple different brands and the various recipes that they offer to ensure your pup is receiving enough variety.

✨ Meet Coco, my sweet neighbor's pup. ❤️

When Coco came to stay with me, she was eating Freshpet and was dealing with very red, raw paws and eye discharge. I've seen similar issues in some other dogs eating Freshpet.

I gently cleaned her paws each evening with my homemade paw cleaner that contains calendula hydrosol and other gentle natural ingredients, and applied CBD oil to help soothe her irritated feet. Then on Wednesday I transitioned her to my fresh, homemade dog food.

By Friday, her paws had improved dramatically, and the eye discharge was gone.

This is another reminder that nutrition can have a profound impact on a dog's health. Sometimes small changes can make a big difference.

If your dog struggles with chronic itching, red paws, recurring eye discharge, or other ongoing issues, don't overlook what's in the food bowl.

💙 Every bite is either fighting disease or feeding it.

Its so out of control. Support independently owned veterinarians, feed the best food that you can, learn how homeopathy and herbs can help in most situations so you are not running to the vet for every little thing. Don't know where to start? I can help with that.

Not sure if your vet is corporate or independently owned? Send me a message and I will send you some information (free of charge) on how you can figure this out because its not always obvious.

The Trump Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is investigating veterinary consolidation amid petflation costs.

The Trump FTC has issued Civil Investigative Demands (CIDs)—legally binding requests requiring companies to produce documents and information—to all parties involved in the proposed Covetrus-MWI Animal Health merger as part of an investigation into potential antitrust concerns.

If approved, the merger would reduce the number of major national veterinary distributors from three to two, with the combined Covetrus-MWI company controlling up to 75 percent of the market.

Local antitrust attorney Joel Thayer told the Daily Caller the merger would dramatically reshape the veterinary distribution market, arguing it would leave one company with overwhelming control over prices and terms.

“It’s looking more like it’s going from, instead of a 3 to 2, it’s looking like it’s going to a 2 to 1, where one company is going to basically dictate all the terms and prices for that type of veterinary service.”

Research from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) has also found that some pet owners have surrendered their animals because they could no longer afford or access necessary veterinary care.

Recent numbers also show that 22 percent of pet owners now carry more than $2,000 in pet-related debt, as the lifetime cost of owning a dog has climbed to roughly $35,000, with the cost of owning a cat not far behind, according to a Gallup poll.

From Original Post:
Saccharomyces boulardii packs a powerful punch against yeast overgrowth in dogs— it actively works against the conditions that allow opportunistic fungi like Malassezia pachydermatis to take hold. It deploys a powerful arsenal of anti-fungal mechanisms:

- It crowds out opportunistic pathogens through competitive exclusion. S. boulardii competes directly with pathogenic fungi for adhesion sites and nutrients, blocking the ecological niche that organisms like Malassezia exploit when the microbiome is disrupted. In the canine gut, Saccharomyces and Candida genera exhibit a strong negative correlation — where one thrives, the other is suppressed — a principle of microbial antagonism that extends to other opportunistic yeasts.[1][2]

- It secretes antifungal compounds that disarm pathogenic fungi. S. boulardii produces capric acid and other medium-chain fatty acids that inhibit fungal filamentation, adhesion, and biofilm formation, the very virulence mechanisms that Malassezia pachydermatis relies on to cause dermatitis and otitis in dogs. M. pachydermatis is classified as a strong biofilm producer, and biofilm-associated resistance is a major driver of treatment failure in canine Malassezia infections. By disrupting biofilm architecture, S. boulardii attacks the problem at its root.[3][4][5]

- It restores gut health, which is the foundation of skin health. Malassezia dermatitis in dogs is almost always secondary to an underlying condition — allergic dermatitis, endocrinopathies, or gut dysbiosis. In a double-blinded, placebo-controlled study, dogs with chronic enteropathies receiving S. boulardii showed significantly improved clinical activity scores, stool consistency, and body condition compared to placebo — with zero adverse effects. A healthy gut microbiome is the first line of defense against the systemic immune dysregulation that permits Malassezia to shift from harmless commensal to aggressive pathogen.[6][7][8]

- It reduces the inflammation that Malassezia exploits. In dogs with canine parvovirus enteritis, adjunctive S. boulardii significantly decreased serum NF-κB and IL-8 concentrations — key inflammatory mediators — while accelerating clinical recovery. This anti-inflammatory action is critical because Malassezia overgrowth thrives in inflamed, immunologically compromised skin and mucosal environments.[9][7]

- Probiotics can directly suppress Malassezia growth. Probiotic ear drops containing Lactobacillaceae strains demonstrated growth inhibition of M. pachydermatis comparable to miconazole and terbinafine in canine studies — confirming that beneficial microorganisms can directly outcompete this pathogen. Oral probiotic supplementation in dogs has also been shown to increase skin microbial diversity and reduce pathogenic Staphylococcus pseudintermedius — the bacterial co-conspirator that frequently accompanies Malassezia in canine skin disease.[10][11]

The fear that giving a dog a yeast-based probiotic will "feed" or "cause" yeast infections fundamentally misunderstands microbial ecology. Malassezia pachydermatis is a lipophilic, skin-dwelling organism that overgrows when the skin barrier is compromised, the immune system is dysregulated, or the microbiome is depleted.[6][7] S. boulardii is a gut-transient, non-lipophilic organism that does the opposite: it strengthens the gut barrier, reduces systemic inflammation, and produces antifungal metabolites. It is completely eliminated from the canine GI tract within 4 days of discontinuation.[8]

In an era of rising azole resistance among M. pachydermatis isolates — with multi-drug-resistant strains now documented worldwide — the need for adjunctive strategies that restore microbial balance rather than simply adding more antifungals has never been greater.[12][6]
