Every night this September, the Gateway Arch in St. Louis goes dark, its exterior lights switched off from dusk to dawn to protect the birds crossing overhead. St. Louis sits along the Mississippi Flyway, a migration corridor used by roughly 40 percent of the nation's migratory waterfowl.

About 80 percent of birds migrate at night, steering by the stars, and bright city lighting throws them off. They mistake the glow for a celestial marker, circle it until they tire, and often crash into the lit structures below. Studies estimate that collisions with buildings kill nearly a billion birds in the United States every year.

When Chicago's McCormick Place went dark during peak migration, bird deaths there fell by 59 percent, and one Philadelphia site recorded a 70 percent drop in collisions. The Park Service has darkened the Arch each spring and fall since 2002, letting whole flocks pass safely overhead.
