The Refuge is a non-profit organization that provides lifelong care to rescued farm animals, educates people about the realities of animal agriculture, and promotes veganism by offering knowledge, support, and community. Founded in 2012, The Refuge is located in North Carolina just 15 minutes away from the downtowns of Carrboro, Saxapahaw, and Pittsboro and 20 minutes away from downtown Chapel Hill.

We are so grateful for Southpoint Pediatric Dentistry for being a PLATINUM SPONSOR for our Three Little Pigs 5K race on October 10 🙏🏃‍♀️

All the money raised during the 5K will go directly towards expanding our Refuge so that we can finally provide pigs with a permanent home, and our sponsors play a major part in making the event possible. Southpoint Pediatric Dentistry was one of the first organizations to decide to sponsor, and their excitement and support has been incredible. Their practice is rainforest-animal-themed, and their staff is full of animal lovers, so we're excited for them to meet our residents and enjoy our Refuge next month during the race!

Being able to finally see Forever Home, the documentary about our Refuge and philosophy of animal-centered design, was an unforgettable highlight of our recent history. It's a beautiful film, and we're honored that Allison Argo and her team dedicated their substantial talents to telling our story. We've loved sharing it with campers in-person and seeing it be shown at film festivals around the country, and now we're thrilled that more people than ever will have a chance to experience it 🎥👀

📣 🎉We’re excited to announce our first-ever Education Internship, in partnership with the UNC Career Center ! 📣🎉

This hybrid internship is a chance for a UNC-Chapel Hill student to gain hands-on experience in humane education while helping us improve our survey system. You’ll learn about our educational programs and the day-to-day public-facing work of a nonprofit sanctuary, including communications and events.

As a hybrid intern, you’ll get the best of both worlds: time at the Refuge getting to know the residents, sanctuary, and staff, along with the flexibility of working remotely.

The internship runs from October 19 through December 22, and applications are open now until the position is filled. UNC students, check out the link below to learn more and apply. We’d love to have you join us!

It was one of the best-attended potlucks we've ever had, the cows were in good spirits, and the food hit the spot as always. Folks even got in some good games of co****le!

Our summer vegan potluck is tomorrow evening!!! If you’ve been to one of our potlucks before, you know what to expect: delicious vegan food, a sense of real community, and time with our cow residents 🐮

After the food, we’ll also have a special concert from our 2025 Artist-in-Residence, Sarah-Lyona Perry 🎶 And while you’re eating and hanging out, you can enjoy board games and yard games like co****le (with these two beautifully decorated Refuge boards!) 👀
