Fox-fire Taxidermy Fox-fire Taxidermy is a full-time shop in Central NC. I do what I describe as "careful taxidermy".

About prices..... Prices vary widely from one shop to another and the quality of the product can be very different as well. My goal is to give my clients good solid mounts that they can be proud of, using high quality materials. My prices generally run a bit more than many others but I put lots of hours into a mount in my effort to please, and I do not use the cheapest materials. It's always a good idea to phone ahead as I sometimes am pulled away from the shop during normal hours but drop-in visits are fine.

Bears have always been special to me. They are challenging to mount but each one becomes an amazing project to work with. If you hunt a bear it is extremely important that you make plans to care for the animal after the kill. Bear skins can spoil quickly due to the thick fur that holds body heat in. Skinning the animal cleanly without leaving 20 pounds of fat on the skin allows the skin to cool much better. Do not roll a warm bear skin up since it can't cool and bacteria will grow quickly. If you are not sure how to proceed after taking a bear talk with your taxidermist before the hunt.

There are some really fine whitetails being taken already in central NC. "Big bucks" are where you find them, here and there in little pockets of good cover. If you are lucky enough to have hunting access to places where deer can survive to 5 or 6 years old AND land that offers the good nutrition that growing heavy antlers requires then you are in the favored minority. From what I can tell most of us who hunt the whitetails do it on lands that are not ideal for hunters or the deer but even in those places where big deer are pretty much not seen....it could happen. I finished this Bobcat mount yesterday. I call them rock mounts and they can be a great alternative to full body mounts. The cost is much less and they take up not much room, also easily moved if that becomes desirable. This one is mounted on an artificial rock that I made from a mold and cast of a real rock. They can also be put on a natural snag or stump of wood and this can be done with about any small animal such as a coyote or raccoon.

A friend gave me a raccoon recently out of his freezer and I decided to mount it for my shop. It's very crowded in there already but I didn't have a raccoon so looked through my in-stock mannikins and found one that's been here a long time. I altered it a little for size and pose and came up with this.

I've often seen someone's post that stated a deer "had no front teeth". Deer never have front teeth on top. Same is true...

I've often seen someone's post that stated a deer "had no front teeth". Deer never have front teeth on top. Same is true of goats, sheep and cattle. This photo shows something unusual though..... canines! Not many whitetails have them but those short top teeth are probably a "throwback" to prehistoric times. Elk have these teeth which we call ivories but whitetails rarely have them.

Our archery season has begun here in NC. Every year some deer are shot but not recovered. Some are superficial wounds and the deer recovers fine, but some suffer a fatal hit and die without sufficient blood trail to locate. Tracking dogs can be the answer when the sign is just not visible to us. It might cost a bit of money for a tracker w/dog but if it saves you days, weeks, even years of regret it is worth it. note: pictures from a few years back of a dog that I had then and one of her recoveries.

I've been in taxidermy a long time....almost 29 years professionally but almost 60 years all totaled. Over that span of time so much improvement has come to the materials and techniques that make up a large part of the mount your taxidermist does for you. The glass eye on the left is what a decent whitetail eye looked like around 1970....sort of a carnival toy-like eye. Today the better eyes that are available are very close to life-like and make a huge difference in a mount. When you hire a taxidermist for that special mount you deserve a quality eye.

Taxidermy can last a long time BUT paint finishes and clear coats are like everything else.... This largemouth bass mount had gotten to look very "old" and my client asked me if I could freshen it up some. I like working with old mounts because every one of them is a different challenge. I tell everyone, "I don't do miracles but I can make most things better". If you have something that means a lot to you but has gotten that very worn out look ,check me out. I turn down a lot of work these days because I wish to do less but I can make room for cleaning/repairs and refinishing of mounts.

My customer found a beautiful shed antler. It had been on the ground a year and was all faded out. He wanted it to be made to look natural and I did what I could do for it. It is a dandy find- nice buck!
