Dusty Acre Homestead

Dusty Acre Homestead A little bit about us....Maurice and Jennifer and our little homestead! And oh how life has changed!! Such is life!! But we are the wierdos in our group..lol!

A place to share thoughts and opinions on a variety of subjects such as organic gardening, prepping, chickens, must read books, herbal remedies, environmental concerns, DIY projects, Farmers Markets...etc...etc.. Next year we will be celebrating 20 years together and ten years ago we found our "happy place"....a one acre acreage! I couldn't wait to have a place where I could have as many cats as I

could have...that changed too (I quickly found out how fast that gets out of control.). Now we are focused on organic gardening, raising chickens, half a$$ prepping (I do more reading about than actually doing), and just generally being more self sustainable. Several months ago I posed the question to Maurice.."Why don't we hang out with more like minded people?" Inevitably, all of our friends we used to do everything with have moved away, bought their own houses, having kids, jobs...blah blah blah. But then lo and behold...this whole new community just appeared before my eyes....a whole bunch of people that are more like us! Obviously, I value whatever time I do get to spend with my friends! We grow most of our own food, I make anything I can homemade (and always adding new stuff), we cook for fun, I cook for a living...basically our lives revolve around food. While I cook, Maurice is hauling food and other life's necessities to the store shelves. We read books, listen to sirius radio and live about as simply as possible...basically we are not trying to keep up with the Jones's! I chose to start this page for a variety of reasons...mostly because after I lost my factory job of 13 years and was fortunate enough to go back to college where I learned that I liked to write. However, I know myself....i.e. I can't bring myself to spend money on a web blogging site when I most likely wont see it through! So, I thought this would be a good place to start.

Every year I see questions about providing heat for your chickens in extremely cold temps...actually I usually see people worrying about them when it's barely below freezing. I've never heated the coop, a heated water bowl is all you need. In EXTREMELY low temperatures (like today) I make sure to go check on them several times a day just to make sure their water isn't froze over (the heated dishes DO have their limitations ). I have a light on a timer for a few hours in the morning and in the evening just to keep up egg production. A thick layer of straw on the floor also helps. I'll throw some corn in the coop giving some extra nutrition and something to do during these long winter days. Here is a helpful blog post I found on cold weather chicken care. Stay warm people!!
