A week ago it took fifteen minutes of quiet, careful patience just to touch the off-side of this filly’s face… yesterday it took less than 45 seconds to get the halter on. It’s not perfect - I still can’t get the halter on her without a food distraction and she’s still very wary - but it’s great progress!

No one is perfect and when I get very busy, the healthy “easy” horses fall through the cracks in terms of handling and attention… but when it becomes a problem (like this kid slipping her halter in the field and being essentially feral…) I’m happy that I have the skills and patience to get things sorted.

She is a good girl and we’re making great strides - she’s turned out in a small paddock with friends during the day, and spends nights in a stall to guarantee that she gets handled twice a day at a minimum. Our time together is overwhelmingly positive and everything happens on her schedule - honey, I’ve got nothing but time.

Every time I think “I wonder if I can…” the answer is yes.

Shenanigans with Maisy after her fifth ride - lots of trotting, higher expectations and less forgiving of “baby behavior”. Pressure washer AND weedeater AND squealing children thirty feet from the round pen… and not a step out of line. I have the best baby in the world.

Thanks for making us brave, Zoe Amoroso ❤️🦄

Noodle is… enthusiastic. 🙄🤣 And relatively careless, like most month-old babies. And born to a maiden mare.

A lot of times that combination results in a foal that is bratty - jumping on mom, kicking everything that moves, bulldozing through things to go wherever they want - because maiden mares don’t have the wherewithal or knowledge (or temperament sometimes) to teach them any better.

So imagine my pleasure when I watched Mama hip check kiddo for being too rough when she started to nurse!! We LOVE a mare that disciplines her child.

When a summer storm turns a third of the outdoor into a giant puddle, you make lemonade 🍋 … or at least take the opportunity to start practicing for water hazards in the Ranch Trail!! I think we’ll do just fine 🤩🥰

Yesterday I challenged Maisy - she’s been so great in small, controlled environments and I wanted to know how she would do with a little more - so we ponied out to a field and tried a little walk about! She was a little looky but generally very brave - except that this tiny little creek bed was a hard no 🤣 MOM don’t you know there’s sharks in there?? 🦈

This is the first time I’ve asked her for anything like this under saddle and she did finally go through (politely) while being led. I know grown ass horses that wouldn’t cross an obstacle like this and I’m thrilled with her behavior, bravery and willingness to consider it, on only her fourth real ride.

We’ll be heading back to an arena or round pen for a few rides to build confidence and make sure she’s having good experiences - but we’ll try again soon!

Our youngest resident foal went out with the big kids yesterday! Peach would really like to be friends but Pip is having NONE of it and tbh, the new mare isn’t wild about it either.

But they’ll be settled and playing together in no time!
