Allowing your dog to sniff is so important when you go for walks. It actually lowers their heart rate and their cortisol levels! This is especially important for shy dogs like Fern. Having a long leash makes this so much easier. I use a 10' cotton web leash.

Walking along the road is a little stressful for my two shy rescue dogs, so putting some easy behaviors in place to help them out before ever walking on the road has really helped.
Things like "leave it" for when we encounter squirrels, "Easy" to get them to slow down and stay calm, "Ready" to let them know that I am going to ask them to do something, "Wait" to have them just pause for a few moments (while I adjust the leashes), and "In" to teach them to turn off of the road and into the ditch (or into a driveway if needed).
All of this was taught outside of the situation and then worked on little by little along the road.
Still a work in progress, always, but they are so good and so easy to walk with.

When I go hiking with my dogs, I use 10 foot cotton web leashes.
They are soft on my hands, easy to manage the length and give my pups some room to move around.
I've used longer leashes, but they tend to get too tangled.

We have an abundance of chipmunks this year, which makes me very happy.
What also makes me happy is how these three are interested, but not getting overly excited. So proud of them.

When I got my big boy, Zeker, he had some serious resource related behaviors and would actually lunge and bite any dog or cat that came near him when he was on a bed. What an amazing boy he is now. So tolerant. This is what games-based training does. (And the little white dog isn't one of mine, so he's really being wonderful about this pestering.)

Young squirrels are EVERYWHERE right now and I'm not sure if they are helping my dogs or driving them crazy.
It does give us LOTS of opportunities to practice disengagemnet.

Your dog is a pro at predicting what is going to happen next. They watch our every move and know if they are going with us or not.
If your pup struggles with getting too excited on walks, look at what is triggering the behavior before you even leave the house.
(And stop asking them if they want to "Go for a walk"!)
The excited behaviors start inside the door.

Looking at this photo, you'd never know that one of these dogs struggles with being still, especially when outside.
But, little Fern, in the blue harness, has a hard time lying down in the grass. She's a busy girl.
So we practice this skill now and then. Building it up slowly so that it doesn't make her pessimistic or frustrated. She's learning and growing all the time.
