This behavior you are seeing here is called “allogrooming” or “mutual grooming”. In this behavior, horses scratch each others withers or backs using their mouths. This behavior is very important in horses to build strong social relationships and cooperation among herd mates. In addition to this, it also provides a calming and regulating effect for horses.

We love to see our horses engage in these behaviors, as it confirms that they are building great relationships with one another.

Horses are incredible animals and their social behaviors are so complex. It is amazing to see how these animals build those friendships!

🌴 Vacation Notice 🌴

Hill Country Horse Rescue will be closed to volunteers, community service, and visitors until May 5. During this time, our team will be taking a short break to rest and recharge. All of our horses will continue to receive the daily care, feeding, and attention they need while we are away.

We will see everyone when we return!

Not long ago, their stories looked very different. But today, they get to simply be horses… to feel safe, to trust, and to find comfort in each other.

Who remembers Dolly?! The mare that anyone could barely touch, and now she is still living her best life with her BFF Zebra! It’s hard to believe, but Dolly was adopted almost TWO years ago—and she is still living her best life! She has truly thrived in her home, and it’s everything we could have hoped for when she left the rescue.

Seeing updates like this reminds us that adoption stories don’t end when they leave—they just keep getting better. Thank you for being part of Dolly’s journey!

We may be a horse rescue… but we can’t help falling in love with the little things too!

Between caring for our rescue horses, one of our favorite moments is catching a glimpse of our hummingbirds darting around the property. They may be tiny, but they bring so much joy and life to the farm.

It’s a good reminder that while we’re here to rescue and care for horses, we’re also lucky to witness the beauty of all kinds of animals along the way 🐴🕊️

We are incredibly grateful to the amazing group from the Travis Manion Foundation who came out and volunteered their time.

As they volunteered in honor of their loved ones who passed on, they brought a deep sense of purpose, compassion, and commitment to the work. Their presence and effort made a meaningful impact on our rescue and the horses who call it home.
