Camp Merricks

Camp Merricks Camp Merricks is a boarding, daycare and training facility. We have wide open, green spaces for dogs to play.

We are NOT a rescue, but work closely with our local shelters and other rescues. Camp Merricks is a different type of place for your dog to stay while you are away. We crate board overnight in our climate controlled dog rooms. Daytime is spent outside free roaming in one of six yards with appropriate doggie friends. Whether you need to be gone for the day and want your pup to have time to play, or

traveling for several weeks, Camp Merricks will make your dog feel like one of the family. We love when owners tell us their dogs get excited when they realize they are on the road to Camp! In addition to boarding, daycare and training services Camp Merricks is active in rescue. Watch our page for foster dogs looking for their new homes.

Have a small dog? We board them too! But smalls get a special boarding experience.

We have two, independent fenced yards for our small dogs. Campers must be dog-tolerant and spayed/neutered if they are over 12 months old.

A Meet & Greet is required prior to a new Camper's first stay. There is no charge for this initial visit. Behavior issues that arise after initial assessment may be cause for dismissal from Camp.

Campers must be up-to-date on the following:

Rabies vaccination
Bordetella vaccination
DHLPP (age appropriate) vaccination. Leptospirosis is prevalent in our area, so we recommend having that vaccination.
Flea/tick preventives are current.
Negative F***l Test within the last 6 months. Due to the large number of Campers visiting we require tests for intestinal parasites more frequently than your veterinarian recommends. A f***l test is not typically included with your dog's annual visit unless you request it.

This young lady has really stepped up for the animals at the Almost Home: Nelson Co SPCA. It's so important to foster caring and action in young people so the good work that so many do now will continue well into the future.

Her mom and family dog, Perla, also participated in our spring group class. Perla also comes for daycare. They are a great family!

Stop into Outback Brewhouse in Lovingston to say thank you, and show a small business some love!

The next few days are going to be dangerously hot! Here at Camp we make sure the dogs are outside when it is cooler in the early morning, and late evening. Between the hours when it is so hot, they are inside with potty breaks every couple of hours.

Be sure your pets are kept safe from this terrible heat. And check on your neighbors too!

We still have Milo and (Holly Jane has been adopted) here at Camp. They are both looking for new homes and are available from Almost Home: Nelson Co SPCA.

Milo is three years old. He's a Schnauzer/Chihuahua mix. Milo is a friendly, funny boy. He does NOT like children, and has bitten a child in his previous home. Here at Camp he has never felt threatened and has not shown that behavior. He DOES like to grab at feet when you are walking away, but a quick "Leave It, Milo" seems to do the trick. He is house trained, dog door trained, and crate trained. He's really a great dog, if you have a quieter household with no children. If children visit, put Milo in another room while they are there.

ADOPTED!! Holly Jane is an 8 month old Airedale mix. She is about 30 lbs and won't get a lot bigger than that. She came to us after she was surrendered to the shelter, also for biting children. Holly most definitely does NOT like children and will bark and growl at them when she hears them. We have worked with her on confidence and she has come a long way. She loves to play with other dogs. She is crate trained, and house trained (though you will want to monitor her like a puppy when she gets home). Holly is a real diamond in the rough, and a super sweet dog, as long as you aren't a noisy child.

Both of these dogs are perfect examples of humans failing to monitor the interactions between dogs and children. Both dogs now have recorded "bite histories" that could have been avoided had the children and dogs been managed correctly, or kept separate. Children and dogs DO NOT GO TOGETHER like "peas and carrots". Dogs will correct children when they are inappropriate... by biting. It's not a fault of the dog. It's the way they communicate.

If you would like to meet either of these dogs, email us at [email protected].

Happy Adoption Day, Frannie! I couldn't have ordered a better family for Frannie. She and her new sister Muffin are pretty well matched in energy and drive.

And Frannie will get all the live she craves. She was so excited, she couldn't sit still.
