We still have Milo and (Holly Jane has been adopted) here at Camp. They are both looking for new homes and are available from Almost Home: Nelson Co SPCA.
Milo is three years old. He's a Schnauzer/Chihuahua mix. Milo is a friendly, funny boy. He does NOT like children, and has bitten a child in his previous home. Here at Camp he has never felt threatened and has not shown that behavior. He DOES like to grab at feet when you are walking away, but a quick "Leave It, Milo" seems to do the trick. He is house trained, dog door trained, and crate trained. He's really a great dog, if you have a quieter household with no children. If children visit, put Milo in another room while they are there.
ADOPTED!! Holly Jane is an 8 month old Airedale mix. She is about 30 lbs and won't get a lot bigger than that. She came to us after she was surrendered to the shelter, also for biting children. Holly most definitely does NOT like children and will bark and growl at them when she hears them. We have worked with her on confidence and she has come a long way. She loves to play with other dogs. She is crate trained, and house trained (though you will want to monitor her like a puppy when she gets home). Holly is a real diamond in the rough, and a super sweet dog, as long as you aren't a noisy child.
Both of these dogs are perfect examples of humans failing to monitor the interactions between dogs and children. Both dogs now have recorded "bite histories" that could have been avoided had the children and dogs been managed correctly, or kept separate. Children and dogs DO NOT GO TOGETHER like "peas and carrots". Dogs will correct children when they are inappropriate... by biting. It's not a fault of the dog. It's the way they communicate.
If you would like to meet either of these dogs, email us at [email protected].
