The Berryhill Farm

The Berryhill Farm I raise and sell Leicester Longwool sheep to help preserve the breed. This is a beautiful, medium sized sheep with lustrous wool great for spinning.

We had a fun time in Maryland and now we're getting ready for Shepherds Harvest!

In Maryland we ended up with 2 championship rams, a reserve champion ewe, and through Greta showing in the open and junior shows, a champion fleece in the open and supreme champion fleece in the junior competition. The sheep show and the conversations with so many were the highlights of the trip..
The drive was the lowlight, but we made it.

Come see us in the barn if you're going to be at Shepherds Harvest!

Hey, just wanted to let everyone know that we will be showing sheep at the Maryland Sheep and Wool Festival this coming weekend. If you're going to be at the festival, stop by to say hello! We should be in Barn 2 at the end of the North side of the barn. Here's a couple pictures of a yearling Leicester Longwool ewe we will be showing in her "never shorn" fleece. We'll have a few Wensleydales along with us as well this year. Hope to see you at the festival!

Just a reminder that sheep shearing day is this coming Saturday! I need to temper expectations though as the professional shearer ended up having to cancel due to a conflict in his schedule. We thought maybe we would try to do the shearing ourselves... So if you want to see what shearing looks like by a non-proffessional, come out Saturday to watch me shear! 😁 We are still planning to have grilled pizzas and plenty of jobs for others to do! If your want to see how you might be able to shear your own sheep, come out to watch...I didn't claim to be good and assuredly not fast, but I'm mostly effective. We plan to get started around 9 AM.

We just got back from the North American Hill Sheep show in Escanaba where the judging of the show is done by UK sheep judges. Eve told me she couldn't do another sheep show this year, so I took my mom and sister again! 😬 They are proving to be good luck for the show ring! My yearling Wensleydale ram, DB Ferris, had quite a good weekend and garnered a lot of attention. While he didn't win the overall championship, he did win the AOB (any other breed) division. He was wearing about 17 months of fleece growth though and I think (I know I'm biased) he wowed a lot of the viewers with the length and luster of his wool. Here are a few pictures of our trip...

Shearing date is set for Saturday October 4 starting around 8:30 am. We are mostly just going to be shearing lambs this year - so around 40 to do. As usual we are open to volunteers and observers alike.

Through my years of showing there is one guy that has stood out as being eximplary at judging sheep shows. My second time to show sheep in Maryland he was one of the judges. I was disappointed with how my sheep performed in that show and so I stopped by the judges booth to ask if they had any time to talk to me about my sheep, one on one. In hindsight I realize how big an ask that was... Those judges are SO BUSY!! They are running all day Saturday. Zane said that he could stop by during his lunch break... He then proceeded to talk to me for his entire break... Over an hour that year! He has always been such an encouragement to the people showing sheep... And willing to give them any help he could offer. Unfortunately he is now fighting for his life through circumstances that are just hard to imagine. If you have time, read his story and say a prayer for him. He needs encouragement as much as financial assistance.

Look at these beauties...a yearling Leicester Longwool ewe and a yearling Wensleydale ram. The Leicester ewe has about 9 months wool growth on her and the Wensleydale ram about 13 months. Both have so much luster!
