The remarkable thing about Marlene Eddleman McRae was that she never stopped trying to improve barrel racing — whether she was competing in it, teaching it, or reinventing it.
Raised on a Colorado ranch, McRae grew up with horses, cattle, and an intense determination to succeed. That drive eventually carried her to the very top of rodeo, including 10 National Finals Rodeo qualifications, a 1983 World Championship, multiple NFR average titles, five Calgary Stampede championships, and even a gold medal performance at the 1988 Olympic Command Performance Rodeo. But her influence stretched far beyond winning.
For decades, McRae traveled the country teaching thousands of young riders through clinics, books, videos, and mentorship while also helping modernize barrel racing equipment through innovative saddle and tack designs.
At the same time, she helped shape the future of the WPRA itself through leadership roles and tireless advocacy for the sport she loved.

"Every win is a highlight, because you put so much forward and so much effort to getting there and having your horse properly prepared. It doesn't matter if you're at a $500-added rodeo or a $50,000-added rodeo; the horse doesn't know the difference. I appreciated every win, no matter how big or small, because I know how much was put into that win, and they all equivalate each other." — Marlene Eddleman McRae
