🌟 Sunday Senior Spotlight: Meet Margie! 🌟

At 7 years old, Margie thought she was entering her retirement era… instead, she unexpectedly entered motherhood again. 😩

This sweet Catahoula Leopard Dog/Labrador Retriever mix came to us as a pregnant stray on March 31st, and on April 13th, she gave birth to 9 puppies right here at the shelter.

And honestly, if Margie could talk, we’re pretty sure she’d say, “At my age?! Absolutely not.” 😂

But she did what good moms do. She loved, protected, and raised her babies. Now it’s finally her turn.

Margie weighs around 40 pounds and is the perfect combination of sweet, gentle, and low maintenance. She’s house trained with regular outings, gets along with other dogs, and we’d even guess she’d do well with cats too.

Her dream life is pretty simple:

☀️ Sunshine naps

🛏️ A comfy bed

🍪 Plenty of snacks

❤️ A family to love her

Most of all, a place where she never has to worry about surviving on her own again.

While many of her puppies have found homes, three are still waiting alongside their mama: Manfred, Madelyn, and Martha (aka Big Martha).

But today is about Margie.

She’s done being the caretaker. She deserves to be the one who’s cared for.

The one who’s spoiled.

The one who’s loved every single day for the rest of her life.

✨ Margie is sponsored to the right home.

👵❤️🐾 She also qualifies for our Seniors for Seniors Program.

Come meet her and see why every single staff member has a soft spot for this sweet girl.

Sometimes the best dogs aren’t the puppies anymore… they’re the ones who have spent years learning exactly how to love you.

🐾 Meet Remi 🖤

At 177 days in the shelter, Remi is now our 3rd longest resident… and honestly, we can’t understand why.

We know we say this a lot, but seriously… we truly can’t understand how some of these amazing dogs end up here, waiting month after month for someone to choose them.

Now anyway… back to Remi. ❤️

He came to us the day after Christmas with Reed (who was recently adopted 🎉), and while his brother found a home, Remi is still waiting for his turn.

Now almost 11 months old, he has spent far too much of his young life growing up in a shelter instead of a home.

And what a wonderful dog he is.

🐾 Good with other dogs

🐾 Great with kids (they absolutely love him, and he loves them right back)

🐾 Walks well on a leash

🐾 Knows “sit”

🐾 Loves to play

🐾 42 solid pounds of happiness

Remi has those eyes that truly see you and a smile that somehow makes you feel extra special. He’s the kind of dog that makes an ordinary day a little brighter just by being himself.

He’s still young, still hopeful, and still waiting for someone to say, “You’re coming home with me.”

177 days is a long time for a puppy to wait.

Won’t you stop by and meet him? You never know who will end up being the one. ❤️

Meet Spike. 🖤

Spike is Twilight’s brother and, just like her, he’s still waiting for his forever family. This handsome Black Mouth Cur mix is 8 (almost 9) months old and weighs 38 lbs.

This sweet boy has a few things he’d love his future family to know about him… first and foremost, he LOVES water. 💦 If there’s a kiddie pool, a hose, a lake, or anywhere to splash around, Spike is all in.

He’s also a big fan of playing ball. 🎾 He’s got the fetch part mastered and is currently working on the “bringing it back” part… but honestly, we think that’s part of his charm. 😂

Spike walks well on a leash, does well with other dogs and kids, isn’t overly hyper, and enjoys both playtime and relaxing with his people.

And can we just talk about that face for a second? 🥹 How is he still here?

Spike has been waiting since April, and we’d love nothing more than to see him finally head home with a family of his own.

🐾 P.S. Spike and the other pups wanted to say THANK YOU for the donation of the new pools! They are already getting plenty of use during these hot days. ☀️💦

If anyone would like to donate the next size up, the pups would appreciate it so much! Thank you for always supporting them. ❤️

Come meet him.

✨ Meet Twilight ✨

Still waiting… and we can’t figure out why. 🥹

Twilight is an 8 (almost 9) month old Black Mouth Cur mix who is ready to trade shelter life for a family of her very own. 🏡❤️

At just 31 lbs, she’s on the smaller side of medium and full of sweetness. Twilight came to us in April with her brother, Spike (who is also available), and another dog. While the days keep passing, she’s still patiently waiting for someone to choose her.

🐾 Gentle and sweet
🐾 Walks well on a leash
🐾 Good with other dogs
🐾 Great with kids
🐾 Not overly hyper
🐾 Loves toys and stuffies

Adoption fee💲2️⃣5️⃣

She’s the kind of dog that would be happy joining you for a walk, playing with a favorite toy, and then curling up nearby while you relax. 💕

Twilight doesn’t need anything fancy… just a family to call her own. 🥹

Come meet Twilight and all of our adoptable dogs today. Your new best friend might be waiting for you. ❤️

🐾🏠 ADOPTION EVENT TOMORROW! 🏠🐾

Looking for your new best friend? Join us tomorrow at PetSmart in Slidell!

📍 PetSmart – Fremaux Town Center
📅 Saturday
⏰ 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM

We’ll have a selection of adoptable dogs and puppies ready to meet their future families. Every adoption helps create much-needed space for animals still waiting at the shelter.

All adopted pets are:
✅ Spayed/neutered
✅ Up to date on age-appropriate vaccinations
✅ Microchipped

And thanks to Greater Good Charities, all dogs over 30 lbs will go home with 6 months of NexGard PLUS—a $235 value!

Not ready to adopt? Consider fostering! Fostering gives a shelter pet a temporary place to stay while they wait for a permanent home. It also helps us learn more about their personality, reduces stress from the shelter environment, and opens a kennel for another animal in need. We provide supplies and support—you provide the love.

Whether you’re looking to adopt, foster, volunteer, or simply meet some amazing dogs, we’d love to see you tomorrow.

Please share this post and help us reach more potential adopters and foster families. One share could be the reason a pet finds a home. ❤️🐾

💙 Emergency Flood Relief Fund for Our Shelter Family 💙

The impact of the recent tropical storm continues to be felt throughout our community, and unfortunately, some of our own shelter family have been directly affected.

One of our longtime volunteers, an 82-year-old animal lover who has dedicated countless hours to helping shelter pets, was forced to evacuate his home with his five dogs due to rising flood waters. Living on a limited fixed income, he is now facing unexpected expenses for temporary lodging and care for his pets while he waits to see what happens as local waterways continue to rise.

In addition, one of our shelter staff members has already experienced water entering their home and is dealing with the immediate challenges that come with flooding and property damage.

We are establishing this emergency relief fund to help cover their immediate needs, including:

🏨 Temporary lodging and shelter
🐾 Boarding and care for displaced pets
🍽️ Food, fuel, and other essential necessities
🧹 Cleanup and emergency supplies
🏠 Other urgent expenses related to flooding and displacement

As creeks and rivers across our area continue to crest at or near record levels, we know there is a possibility that additional members of our shelter family may be impacted in the coming days. Any funds raised beyond the immediate needs of these individuals will be used to assist other shelter staff, volunteers, or foster families who experience flood-related hardships from this event.

Our team gives so much of themselves every day to care for the animals and people of our community. Today, we’re asking our community to help care for them.

Every donation, no matter the amount, will make a difference. If you’re unable to contribute financially, please consider sharing this fundraiser to help us reach others who may be able to help.

Thank you for supporting the people who work tirelessly behind the scenes to make a difference for animals every day.

ADOPTED 🎉🥰🐾

Meet Koda… again. 🐾💙

We’re giving this handsome boy another chance to be seen because somehow he’s still waiting.

Koda is a 47lb, 2-year-old shepherd mix (maybe husky!) who came to us at the beginning of April and has been patiently hoping his person would walk through the door ever since.

He’s the total package:

🐾 Walks well on a leash
🐾 Does well with other dogs
🐾 Good with kids
🐾 Knows how to sit
🐾 Loves to play
🐾 Treat motivated (his favorite kind of employee payment 🍪😂)
🐾 Listens well and enjoys learning
🐾 Extremely photogenic and always ready for his close-up 📸✨

Koda has that fun, happy personality that makes him easy to spend time with. He’s the kind of dog who would love a family adventure one minute and curl up beside you the next.

He’s handsome, smart, and eager to please… so we’re a little confused how he’s still here.

Maybe it’s because the right person just hasn’t seen him yet.

Could that be you? ❤️
