About me: My name is Erin Marion, I have been around dogs since I was born in Chester Springs Pennsylvania. I built my business from the ground up in Portland, Oregon and now I am back to my roots in PA! When I was little all of my favorite memories were stuffing my nose into any dog book or animal book I could find. Raised with an 80lb Bouvier De Flandres, I never had a fear of dogs or animals (considering our family dog looked like a bear). Her unique outlook on animal behavior opened my eyes to seeing animals differently. Once I adopted my first dog who suffered from extreme separation anxiety, leash aggression and much more I started to obsess over all there was about dogs and being a good dog owner to a high energy canine. Eleven years later I have taken every seminar, class, one-on-one talk, and even my own clients experience and have molded them into my training method. I make sure every client feels heard, respected and appreciated ! I am here to help you and your dog become a team. Yes, training the dog is a part of it, but truly this is me training you to strengthen your commands, body language, and appreciation for your dog and for yourself. I specialize in helping deaf and blind dog guardians create a unique and special language to be able to communicate with their dog effectively. I am also an official training partner for Speak! All of my dogs are my greatest teachers and Darla is no exception.

I use a variety of touch cues with Darla and as you can imagine, sensations like the vibration of the grooming tools, are much more heightened for a dog like her.

It’s been so rewarding getting to see how far we have come with this process and of course, a lot of challenges along the way.

I often have to remind myself to move at her own pace..which is not always my ideal pace. Getting to stare at her cute little grinch feet are a huge bonus though.

Has anyone else worked through grooming with their blind or deaf dog?

Otis, sweet boy. He taught me so much about what it means to be a dog guardian and offered so much insight into life as a dog trainer.

Our life together was shorter than I wanted, yet so big and full of love; that is my wish for every one of my clients that I work with to see life with their dog as one big adventure...no atter how much time you have together.

And I know Otis would have wanted that too.

By no means, am I advising you not to take your Rough coat collie to the groomer. I’ve just noticed that over the years Clark has become sound, sensitive and tends to totally shut down when in an environment he’s uncomfortable in.   We’ve practiced his entire life on skills such a brushing, nail trims, bathing, cutting his hair and cleaning his eyes and ears.

So at this point, we have both accepted the fact that I am just his personal groomer and it’s his little spa day.

Okay, it couldn’t just be Darla hoping on this trend.

Owning a farm does mean being a part of the sun up to sun down club and don’t get me wrong, it doesn’t always look like this much fun but there is always this much fun to be had.

Darla is deaf and blind but that doesn’t stop her from wanting to join farm camp and, it shouldn’t!

It has, of course, taken us both time to learn these skills to be able to put them in to action during busy activities. And I am always paying attention to her body language and looking out for signals that tell me when she is ready to head inside for the day.

Having a deaf, blind or both dog doesn’t mean the world has to be smaller, it just means you get to work together to build the world that works for them!

And I like to think there are some perks of being the farm camp mom. 😉
