As a longtime pet sitter, I have enormous respect for these dogs and the incredible work they do. Remember that a working service dog isnā€™t simply a very well-behaved pet. Theyā€™re doing a job that can be essential to their handlerā€™s independence and safety.

Admire them from a distance, donā€™t distract them and ALWAYS ASK before interacting.

September is Animal Pain Awareness Month. ā¤ļø

One thing years of pet sitting has taught me: animals donā€™t always show pain the way we expect. A dog who suddenly hesitates before jumping on the couch or a cat who starts hiding more may be telling us something.

Knowing your petā€™s normal behavior makes it much easier to notice when something changes. When in doubt, always talk to your veterinarian.
