Riding out of the Horse Thief campground at Trappers Lake in Meeker CO (9,700’).
The rides from here can be long pack trips, epic day loops or this fairly easy out and back on the Duck Lake trail.

She was a wild mustang round up in a horrific experience that killed 50 horses.
She was adopted and became so terrified from the experience she was still untouchable and expected anything in my hand to be a weapon.
After months of hard work and patience we are here now 💙

After my week in Moab I needed a spot to wait another week in the way to Boulder.
Long ago I had pinned Horse Thief campground at Trappers lake. It had fabulous reviews and the first week in October had zero reservations. I think it is not usually this warm up at 9,700’. Day time temps in the 70’s and overnight in the 40’s.
Riding in the fall foliage in 70 degree weather is amazing.

Upper Onion Creek horse group horse camp in Moab UT
This was always on the bucket list but two obstacles prevented us from coming in the past. First there is no water in Moab and when we traveled with 4 horses we could not haul water too. Second, this group camp is extremely expensive ($100 a night) and books up months in advance.

Now that I am traveling alone with only two horses and a lighter camper I can haul water. I was only 3 hours away and looking to get to a dry place while Colorado was drowning. Someone had canceled their reservation and it was now first come first serve. That also means the price drops to $50 a night. Still pricey but worth it for my first time camping without Scout and getting this opportunity I had been waiting years for.

This might look impressive to you but it is monumental for Dreamer.
Her past trauma from her life before I adopted her made her terrified of enclosed spaces. Trailers, barns, shade shelters, anything enclosed.
I am celebrating her today, it has been 18 months of work helping her get over that trauma. Look what she did today!!!

Update: we rode through today!! I was riding Joker and ponying Dreamer. No hesitation ❤️

A bucket list check was finding a hot spring we could camp with the ponies. Virgin Valley hot spring and campground in Winnemucca NV.
Cost: 10/10 free
Sites: 10/10 large, spread out , level, picnic table
Getting in: 10/10 paved until last mile. Dirt section is well maintained
Amenities : 8/10 warm spring pool, shower, pit toilet, friendly host, flowing puddle for horses to drink, pens would make it a 10
Vibe: 10/10 people were quiet, respectful and kept to themselves.
