In 2022 we spent the night on the banks of the Carson River at Scout Camp. This camp was on the path of a pony express route. We spent 2 nights and rode to the nearby Buckland pony express station.

7 years to the day.
Aug 15 2019 we began our journey seeing The US on horseback fulltime, she was 9.
Today Aug 15, 2026, is the first day I remain on the road and she starts college life.

This ride was way back in 2021. It is where I learned a lot of important lessons. We rode up a long steep switchback out of camp to get onto the beautiful mountain lakes. Three maps we cross checked (including the map at the trailhead) all showed this could be a loop ride.
2/3rds of the way we could not find the trail any longer. We searched on horseback and in foot. I did not want to ride back down the steep switchback. Mom let me decide. She said if we try to push through without a good trail we could get trapped up here overnight and one of the horses could get injured. If we turn back we know the way and we know we can get back before dark. I made the choice to turn back. This is how my schooling happened over the course of 7 years in the saddle from age 9-17. It was an epic day. We swam in the lakes, lunched on the warm rocks, raced a thunder storm, rode through gorgeous wildflowers and made it home safe.
