Lilo might have to come back to the shelter, and she could really use your help. 🥹 This cuddly baby angel has been the best girl in foster, but her foster mom will be going out of town for several weeks. Can we find her an adopter or another foster so she doesn't have to return to kennel life?

Lilo is dog-friendly, social, and is happiest when she's being held. She's the ideal pet for just about any home. She does incredibly well with people, and she won't even eat unless her humans are in sight. 🥲

Volunteering at an animal shelter is a little...well, stinky. It's dirty work. You can't wear your fancy clothes or have your hair done up. An excited dog and some mud will show you why.

But volunteers show up weekend after weekend, ready with their go-to shelter jeans and hair in a bun, prepared to get covered in the day's smelly mess with our staff. And for one simple reason: they love the dogs.

We have many different opportunities available for those who want to help. We do ask for a minimum of 4 hours a month, with your first volunteer hours being spent learning the ins and outs of shelter life. After that, you're free to come in, walk some dogs, or help out wherever needed.

Niko's a little slumped today because no one wants to adopt him, even though he's the best boy in foster. 🥲 After 3 months in the shelter, he finally got a chance to prove himself in a temporary home. Here's how it's going:

"He likes to spend time outside in our yard smelling, listening, relaxing, and takes his sentry job very seriously but he does prefer to have company. He likes to go for walks and pulls just a little. Niko lets us know if he needs anything…food, treats, playtime. He is a bit of a velcro dog and wants to be where you are. He is pretty mellow in the morning but active late afternoon and evening. He has the best zoomies!"

Forest didn't want to get near us. We thought he was terrified of the shelter. But an X-ray revealed there was much more to his story.

Forest has had a bad leg for a long time.

One of his hind legs had been broken in the past, and it never healed properly. His hip was chronically dislocated. Dislocated for so long that new bone formed around it, creating a "false joint." We don't know how much pain he has been in, or for how long.

So we amputated it.

Slowly, we're seeing him open up to us. Before, he wouldn't walk on a leash.

Now, even with one leg gone, he's started walking around the shelter with ease. (Even if it's still a little scary.)

He's still wary of strangers. But his body language tells us he wants to trust in humans - he just needs time to feel safe.

We took 106 stray dogs in just three days. 🥲Maricopa County residents, please check our East and West shelters if you have lost your dog. We know some of these pups have homes out there somewhere.

October is National Pit Bull Awareness Month! 💙 Pitties are often misunderstood and believed to be inherently dangerous or aggressive. However, as a shelter that takes in thousands of bully mixes every year, we can say from experience that they can be just as affectionate, loyal, and silly as any other dog.
