🐱 Cats spend a LOT of time sleeping, but how do you know when it’s more than just a nap?

Most cats sleep around 12–16 hours a day, and kittens and senior cats may need even more rest. What matters is how your cat acts when they’re awake!

If you notice changes in their energy, appetite, behavior, or daily routine, don’t automatically assume they’re just extra sleepy. These changes can sometimes signal an underlying health concern.

You know your cat best. If something seems off, reach out to your veterinarian.

🎃 Halloween can be fun for us, but all the costumes, doorbells, unfamiliar faces, and extra noise can be overwhelming for our pets.

Help your pet feel safe this Halloween by providing a quiet space away from the festivities, keeping them safely indoors, and making sure they can’t slip out through an open door while trick-or-treaters come and go.

🐾 Watch for signs of stress, such as hiding, pacing, panting, trembling, or excessive barking. If your pet seems overwhelmed, give them space and let them relax away from the excitement.

Coyotes are part of the Arizona landscape and can sometimes make their way into residential neighborhoods. Knowing how to respond to an encounter can help you make safer choices for yourself and your pets.

Keep pets supervised when they’re outside, keep dogs close and on leash during walks, and avoid leaving food or other attractants outdoors.

If you encounter a coyote, don’t run. Keep your pet with you, make yourself appear larger, use a loud, confident voice, and slowly move away. Never approach or attempt to interact with a wild coyote.

If your pet is bitten or attacked, seek veterinary care as soon as possible. Even small puncture wounds can hide deeper injuries or become infected.

October 1 is National Black Dog Day, a day to celebrate the black-coated dogs who deserve just as much attention, love, and care as any other pup.

Black dogs are often overlooked in shelters, and research has found that coat color can influence adoption outcomes in some shelter populations. The research isn’t consistent across every shelter, but it’s a good reminder to look beyond appearance when choosing a new companion.

Their dark coats can also make certain changes harder to notice, including skin irritation, lumps, and ticks. Regular hands-on checks can help you spot anything unusual early.

Ever seen your cat suddenly turn into a fluffy little bottle brush?

A puffed-up tail is a form of body language called piloerection. It happens when your cat’s nervous system responds to heightened arousal, such as fear, surprise, feeling threatened, or even intense excitement.

The puffed fur can make your cat appear larger, which is part of their instinctive response to a situation they perceive as significant.

Pay attention to the rest of their body language, too. Flattened ears, a crouched posture, hiding, hissing, swatting, or trying to escape can indicate that your cat is feeling stressed or frightened.

So if you see the floof, take a look at what happened right before it. Your cat may be telling you that something has their attention.
