Cats rarely show pain the way dogs do.

As both predators and prey in the wild, cats evolved to hide signs of weakness. Unfortunately, that means many painful conditions can go unnoticed until they become more advanced.

Instead of vocalizing or obviously limping, cats often show pain through subtle changes in their behavior, appetite, grooming habits, activity level, or interactions with family members.

May 28 is National Heat Awareness Day, and in Arizona heat can become dangerous fast for pets.

Hot pavement can cause painful paw burns in minutes, even if it does not feel extreme outside. Signs can include limping, licking feet, or damaged paw pads, but dogs do not always show pain clearly.

Avoid hot surfaces when possible and stick to cooler times of day.
