Knowing a command in the living room is step one. Doing it at Home Depot is a different story. 😅

Prince is heading into his second week, which means more field trips and more real-world distractions!

We’ve been working on place-to-place, holding commands, and beginning off-leash obedience at home. Now we’ll start testing those skills around carts, people, noises, smells, and everything else the real world throws at him.

He’s right on schedule and progressing nicely!

Speedy the Husky has been working on duration downs.

A dog who knows “down” is great. A dog who can stay down while you walk away, move around, open doors, or go about your day? That’s where obedience becomes useful in real life.

From bouncing everywhere to being SENT to place. 👏

Send-to-place was an important goal for Cora, and she’s starting to put the pieces together! Instead of needing to be walked over to her bed, we’re teaching her to move away from the handler, find her place, and settle there.

It might look like a simple command, but it combines listening, impulse control, independence, and duration.

For our energetic little social butterfly, that’s a pretty big deal!

We’ve been working on sending her to her cot from a little more distance instead of having to walk her all the way over. She’s starting to understand the assignment and make that connection on her own.

We’re adding distance, building confidence, and making those commands smoother. Today’s challenge was me sitting down while asking for the command. A lot of times, dogs start to think commands only apply when we’re standing right next to them, so changing our position helps them understand that the command means the same thing no matter where we are.

Not every dog walks into training ready to take on the world. ❤️

Chloe came in a little more cautious and naturally unsure in new situations. With dogs like her, confidence isn’t built by forcing them through everything. It’s built through successful experiences, one after another.

Every neighborhood walk, new environment, training session, and field trip gives Chloe another opportunity to realize, “Hey, I can do this.”

And we’re starting to see more of her personality come out!

Don’t let the cute face fool you. Prince came ready to learn. 😂

We started with come, sit, place, down, and learning how to follow leash pressure instead of fighting against it. He caught onto the concept quickly and has been cruising right along with his training.

Smart, motivated, and willing to work? We’ll take it!

Now that the foundation is there, it’s time to start asking for those same skills outside of the house.

Cora has never met a situation she couldn’t add a little extra enthusiasm to. 😂

People? Exciting.
Dogs? Exciting.
Birds? Obviously exciting.
Going for a walk? BEST DAY EVER.

A big part of Cora’s training has been teaching her that she can experience all of those exciting things without needing to participate in every single one of them.

Heel, impulse control, duration work, and lots of practice settling have been helping us install that much-needed “chill button.”

Speedy by name… and occasionally a little too speedy on the leash. 😂

We’ve spent a lot of time teaching this guy that walks don’t need to be a race. Heel means staying with his handler, matching their pace, and keeping that position even when something more interesting is happening nearby.

He’s come a long way, and watching everything start to click during his final week has been fun!

Confidence looks good on you, Barkley. 👏

This guy came in a little unsure of the world around him, especially when other dogs were involved. Fast forward a couple of weeks and we’re seeing a much more confident dog!

Neighborhood walks, new environments, barking dogs, busy stores, and even the farmers market have all given Barkley opportunities to learn that he doesn’t need to react to everything around him.

We’re not trying to make him love every dog he sees. Neutrality is the goal. See it, acknowledge it, and keep moving. That’s progress!

Speedy can sit, stand, lay down, wiggle around, or do whatever he wants on the cot… but the one rule is he has to stay on it until he’s released. 😂

At this point, I’m doing everything I can to convince him to get off the cot and test that impulse control. Come on, Speedy… make a bad decision. 🤣

The goal is for him to understand that no matter what distractions are happening around him, the command stays the same until he hears “come!”
