Performance Equine Specialists is dedicated to providing knowledge and experience to the equine athlete and their riders. Dr. Ellis Farstvedt is a nationally recognized boarded Equine Surgeon specializing in Lameness and Orthopedic surgery and rehabilitation. He has provided surgical services to clients from Alaska to Arizona and everywhere in between. Dr. Mandi Holland is a certified veterinary acupuncturist and specializes in equine sports medicine. Her background has always been with the performance horse and was boosted by her 3 years of experience on the Race Track at Turf Paradise in Phoenix, AZ. The husband and wife duo compliment each other by bringing a different piece of the puzzle together for the equine athlete.

In honor of National Hug & High Five Day, and following the National Day of Encouragement, we’re celebrating something we could all use a little more of, encouraging one another.

In the horse world, there are incredible wins worth celebrating…and there are plenty of “not-so-wins” along the way, too.

On Patriot Day, we honor the lives lost on September 11, 2001, the heroes who courageously answered the call, and the families whose lives were forever changed.

⛈️🐴 MONSOON SEASON: WE’RE ALMOST THERE, ARIZONA! 🐴⛈️

As we make our way through the final stretch of Arizona’s monsoon season, those sudden storms, high winds, heavy rain, lightning, and flying debris can still create dangerous and stressful situations for our equine family members.

A few simple precautions can make a big difference: make sure horses have access to a safe, secure shelter, check fencing and gates after strong winds, remove or secure loose objects around barns and pens, keep clean water available after storms, and watch closely for changes in behavior, appetite, hydration, or signs of injury.

And remember—storms can roll in FAST. If severe weather is approaching, having a plan before it arrives is always better than trying to react in the middle of it.

We’re almost through another Arizona monsoon season! 🌵⛈️ Until then, stay weather-aware, stay prepared, and keep those horses safe.

☀️THE SUMMER CHECK-IN: What Is Your Horse Telling You?

August in Arizona can mean fewer competitions, lighter riding schedules, and a little more downtime—but that downtime can actually tell you a lot about your horse.

This is a great time to simply observe.

How does your horse walk out of the stall or pen?
Do they seem stiff after standing?
Are they comfortable turning both directions?
Have you noticed changes in their stride, attitude, appetite, or energy?
Are they maintaining weight and staying well hydrated?
Are they sweating normally in the heat?

Sometimes the smallest changes are the first clues that your horse may need a little extra attention.

At Performance Equine Specialists, we believe you know your horse better than anyone. If something just doesn't feel quite right, it's worth taking a closer look—especially while you have the opportunity to address it before the busy fall riding and competition season begins.

Use the summer slowdown to your advantage.
