What nobody tells you about bees…
Why Houses Are Prime Real Estate for Bees
Perfect Cavity Size & Elevation: Scout bees actively search for enclosed hollow spaces around 20 to 40 liters in volume—roughly matching the empty void between two 16-inch wall studs, a soffit, or an irrigation valve box. They also prefer entrances elevated 8 to 15 feet off the ground to stay clear of ground predators and dampness.
Built-in Climate Control: Wall insulation, siding, and drywall act as a thermal shield. This saves the colony massive amounts of energy, making it much easier to keep their brood nest at a steady 93°F–95°F (34°C–35°C) during freezing winters or scorching summer heat.
Microscopic Access Requirements: A worker bee only needs a gap or crack of about 1/4 inch (6 mm) to pass through. Unsealed roof eaves, stucco weep holes, plumbing vents, or light fixtures provide effortless entry points into completely sheltered internal voids.
Lingering Pheromone Signals: If a hive ever occupied a wall previously, leftover wax, propolis, and queen pheromones absorb into the wood framing and stay detectable for years. Scout bees catch these scents from hundreds of yards away, signaling a pre-vetted, highly secure location.
