Every surgery starts long before the first incision. It starts with a veterinary technician who has spent years mastering their skills, anticipating needs, monitoring vitals, and showing up fully prepared for every patient who comes through the door.

Vet techs are the heart of every OR team, and their skill and dedication make a difference every single day. At some VCA specialty hospitals, we take surgical collaboration even further. Some of our teams include Certified Surgical Technologists (CSTs) — professionals who earned specialized degrees specifically to support surgeons in the OR.

The result? Less time under anesthesia. Better outcomes. And a team that truly works as one. šŸ’™

Because every patient is somebody's pet — and they deserve nothing less than the best.

During National Adopt a Cat Month, every June, hundreds of felines find a forever home, thanks to the constant campaigning done by numerous cat lovers across the U.S. Since June is considered kitten season, a lot of cats end up homeless when their owners are unable to find them a home. Seeing this influx in cats brought to the shelters, many campaigns for cat adoption started in June. Why should you adopt a cat? Because they are harmless and loving creatures who are easy to keep as pets and provide some of the best cuddles at night!

The National Adopt a Cat Month was formed by American Humane 45 years ago in order to encourage people to stop buying cats and, instead, adopt them from shelters. The month selected for the adoption drive was June, since a lot of cats tend to reproduce during this month — and, since a cat can birth up to seven kittens, it’s not a surprise that most of them often end up in animal shelters. Seeing how shelter cats are deprived of a loving environment, American Humane kickstarted this adoption month in the hopes of spreading awareness regarding the rescuing and adoption of cats.

American Humane is an organization that has existed for over 100 years. In fact, they were the first to rescue 68,000 wounded horses in Europe when wars were common. They also stepped up to help animals during 9/11, Hurricane Sandy, and Hurricane Dorian. The motive of the organization is also to strengthen the bond between humans and animals since these innocent creatures are barely able to express themselves.

National Pet Preparedness Month takes place in June and reminds pet owners to always prepare emergency plans for their animal friends so that they can weather emergency conditions safely. Pets are as much victims of natural and man-made disasters as humans and, therefore, owners must also be prepared to evacuate their pets with the supplies necessary for their needs.
In the event of facing an emergency or natural disaster, it is paramount that everyone in your house gets out safely, including your pets. From house fires and blackouts to hurricanes and floods, such events are frightening for us and can be more so for pets, who rely on their owners to keep them safe. Thus, having emergency plans for your pets is crucial in making sure they get out and handle the situation safely.

Emergency plans can range from knowing where to gather following an emergency, placing leashes or pet food in easy-to-remember places, or constructing go kits that contain everything that your pet needs to weather emergencies, such as food, leashes, medication, clothes, and others. It can also consist of identifying nearby shelters that can assist you in taking care of your pet. In large-scale events such as hurricanes, having such plans ready might save your pet from running off, getting harmed, or being overlooked by relief workers.
National Pet Preparedness Month is here to remind you that the safety of your pets lies primarily in your hands.

International Hug Your Cat Day, which is observed on May 30, is an opportunity to lavish your cat with hugs and pamper it as it deserves. Of course, you should already be doing this, but International Hug Your Cat Day is the one day dedicated specifically to doing so. The ā€˜domestic cat’ is a species in the Felidae family that is often distinguished from the wild members of the larger cat family. Cats are classified as either house cats, farm cats, or feral cats, which roam freely and avoid human contact. Domestic cats are of great importance and value to humans for companionship and their ability to kill rodents. Cats can hear sounds that are too faint or occur at high frequencies beyond human hearing, such as those made by mice and other such small mammals.
