Wayne, who we briefly called Beetlejuice, is a certified survivor of FIP!
Wayne arrived to Get a Gato originally back in October, so we renamed him Beetlejuice to fit the Halloween spirit at the time. Despite the festivities, Beetlejuice was a bit reserved, found sleeping most of the day, and just seemed down in the dumps. We noticed he looked skinny and wasn't gaining weight despite all the meals and treats offered to him, so we spoke with our partner rescue who promptly took him back for examination - that was how we discovered he had FIP.

FIP used to be a death sentence in cats, but with medication that has been made accessible in recent years, we can fight back and give these cats a chance. HOTC gave Wayne that chance and now he's back and better than ever. With a healthy round belly and drive for playtime and cuddles, Wayne is ready to find his forever home with someone who can appreciate his journey in overcoming illness to make it this far and give him a new lease on life that he completely and utterly deserves 🖤🤍

Please enjoy the Wayne posting as it makes our hearts full to see him so active and happy compared to how we saw him before.

Meet Marimekko!

This 5 year old loves bold designs but truly yearns for a simple life full of love and attention. Marimekko is the sweetest cat with people but prefers to be the only distributor of her product (love), meaning she would thrive best as an only cat.

We know for a fact she's definitely anti-dog, which is a shame, but comes with the territory of being a fashionista. She's a sensitive gal, being diagnosed with chronic rhinitis, which can make breathing a little more difficult with high intensity play or stress, so it's best to respect her wishes for a calm and loving home where she can breathe easy every day.

Marimekko's stuffy nose doesn't stop her from enjoying the good things in life, like Churu and catnip, so when you stop in, make sure to offer her some!

Sativa and Indica are here to wish you a happy 🍃 day!

This bonded pair of boys are about 1 year old and love to have a good time. Indica, the grey and white tabby, is the more chill guy of the duo. He enjoys making biscuits and getting endless affection.
Sativa, on the other hand, is anything but chill. He has the energy of a 6 month old kitten and plays harder than the youngest kittens in our lounge. Once he gets it all out of his system though, he will slump into the comfiest lap he can find for some cuddles. Sativa loves to cuddle and kiss his brother who happily accepts the snuggles.

These boys would love a home with someone who can keep up with both their drive for affection and attention and really just chill with them all day long.

I’ve been fostering for years, but this past week was the most difficult so far.

I took in my first newborn litter and mom, born the morning they came to me. Despite the best efforts of everyone involved we lost 2 out of 5 of the babies. One of the tabbies suddenly passed within 24 hours despite seeming to thrive and the other was the runt of the litter who we fed around the clock and even sent to .cradle when she wasn’t making any progress with us. Thank you to Foxy’s for giving her the best chance, and for the support, and our manager Rose for all of the help. We hope that Black Eyed Susan and Aster are enjoying all of the snuggles and snacks over the rainbow bridge.

The other tough case is José Weezer, our asthma guy. He’s been with HOTC for a couple of months now and has had to go to the ER 3 seperate times for supportive care. He had another scare a couple of days ago but thanks to the team at Veg he’s home with me and improving on 2 different inhalers, steroids, and antibiotics. Truly everyone that meets José gushes over him and how good of a boy he is. He’s such a loving and goody orange sweetheart and we’re so thankful that our rescue partner continues to care for him when he needs it most. His care has cost the rescue thousands of dollars, so please donate to and share his fundraiser if you’re able to. We’re hoping he’ll continue to get better so he can come to the cafe and spread his silly joy to even more humans!

Fostering isn’t easy. But it’s beyond important. These cats all need somewhere safe to heal and feel loved so that they can find their forever. Kitten season is just beginning, so please continue to support the folks involved in rescue, we need it and so do our furry babies.

Marsh has taken up a career in modeling to help us get more donations!

Recently he took a gig to model our remaining Churu which we could really use more of!

Until INABA Churu - World's # 1 company for Wet Cat Treats & Mixers offially signs Marsh as their new spokescat, we really need additional Churu donations as well as litter and food to keep these needy cats happy!

We will also take similar tube treats if available since some cats (Bonita) have tired of the normal Churu flavors offered to her, I mean, them.

Some Graduations from earlier this week!

⚾️ Little Utley was the first of his little league pals to get adopted! Utley stole the hearts of his new humans online so they knew they had to schedule a meet and greet in person to seal the deal.
He's now playing for a new home team with a familiar face...Deperado! Desperado is also a Get a Gato alumni and will be so happy to have a little brother. Their new names are Ziti and Zombie 🥰

🥤Baja also found her new momma this week! Although we initially thought Baja and Blast were a bonded pair, it turns out Baja rather fly solo when it comes to getting attention. She doesn't mind other cats too much, but Blast ended up getting along better with the more rambunctious cats in the room.
Baja doesn't mind though, since she takes her naps very seriously. She naps hard to play hard so her new human will still need to entertain her but she already knows that. Baja will be getting all of the attention for years to come.

Congrats to our kitties and their new humans!
We would never be able to get this far without House Of The Cat as our rescue partner, who sets these felines up for success before they even get to the café

If you made it this far, consider donating to HOTC to help alleviate the cost of Jose's recent emergency vet bill. He's an incredibly sweet cat who may come to Get a Gato very soon once he is recovered.

On this day two years ago, Get a Gato opened its doors to the public and to the cats in need of a place to be seen, socialized, and eventually adopted out into loving homes.

It hasn't been easy - we've encountered our fair share of hiccups as any new business in Philadelphia, but cat cafés don't exactly have a blueprint to follow since many operate so differently. But we made it through those difficult times, learned from every new experience, and are constantly striving to make Get a Gato a purrfect paradise for cat lovers and cats alike.

We are so thankful every day for the support of the community, our affiliates and partners, and for the unique love we get to experience from rescue cats no matter how short or long their stay is.

If you haven't had a chance yet, come try our birthday cake latte thats only avaliable for this month - it comes in both vanilla and chocolate flavors!

Additionally, we are still fundraising for 10K so our goal can be met by a generous donor willing to match. Reaching this goal means we can speed up our renovation project and continue our work as we strive to be Philadelphia's go-to cat café

Janet is STILL here and waiting to connect to a special human who can see her potential as the perfect house cat/companion thats deep deep DEEP down inside.

Janet originally arrived in February along with Latoya; both former barn cats who were fostered before coming to the café. They reacted more skittish than we anticipated, but they wouldn't be the first shy cats we've had that came and went.

Latoya eventually opened up ever so slightly and that was enough to find a connection with an adopter willing to take a chance...literally a day later we got a message saying she's super affectionate and doing great! Sometimes our shy cats just do a complete 180 when they know they're in an environment that feels more predictable. Other times they come around to café life and become social(ish) butterflies (Shiv and Shank are fair examples that came around the same time!)

Now Janet...hasn't really changed much at first glance. She still stays out of reach when groups are happening but when its quiet she may make an appearance on the floor running to and from her next perch. She rarely allows petting but if you go in with confidence when she is relaxed, she allows herself to be content with the attempt at affection. This is an AMAZING improvement considering she would bolt at any approach and constantly hide out of reach, let alone sight. We even got to clip her nails the other day while ahe was taking a nap 🥹

Janet is still doing well, she just prefers to do it when there's no crowds. If you watch her "off the clock" from the windows, you can find her playing with toys, hanging out with other cats, exploring the lounge, and just letting herself be a cat.

Although we are making small breakthroughs with her and letting her come to us at her own pace, we would love to see her adopted sooner since we think her progress would happen much faster in a home environment than at the lounge.

If anyone is experienced with a TTA (time to adjust) kitty who may want to give you the side eye for a few months before she gives in and allows herself to snuggle, please consider Janet as your next passion project.

PS : she likes Churu and toys so she absolutely can be swayed!
