Did you know that there are some diseases that can cross the species barrier? Certain bacteria, fungi, parasites, and viruses can be transmitted to you from your companion animal. These diseases can range in severity from mild to severe, to even fatal. Rabies, for example, is almost always fatal when not treated in time. This is why the law requires companion animals be up to date on their Rabies vaccinations to limit transmission risk. While Rabies virus is often spread via a bite from an infected animal, the risk for other diseases can be limited with good hygiene practices (hand washing) and bringing your pet in for treatment for any skin lesions or loose stools. Prevention for fleas and ticks will limit your exposure to those parasites as well as tick borne diseases they can spread to your or your pets.
