He was so little. And this is all before things got really bad. All grown up and fine now.😊
Rowdy was born with severely contracted tendons, and a curve in his spine. He was unable to get up. His cord stayed attached to the placenta outside of the mare for over an hour. The mare rejected him after about 2 hrs of him struggling to get up. His temp was only 95 degrees. The vets were called to euthanize him, but instead called us to see if we could save him (with their help, of course) and the owner signed him over to us. At 5 hours old he was finally able to stand and the first 48 hrs, he had a hard time keeping his body temperature stable. We are beyond exhausted as he was so critical for the first week and is just now getting to be like a normal foal. He is still under care that requires him to be in a controlled environment with heating and air conditioning. Also, he has hurt tendons in his left pastern and knee, likely from a pinched nerve and tight muscles around his spine that is causing his to buckle over on that leg. This is why he wears a brace. He is receiving cold laser therapy, has had plasma, fluids, antibiotics, pain meds and round the clock bottle feedings. Keep him and us in your prayers please, as we continue to care for him around the clock. Thank you all for your support! PLEASE share his story as we will be looking for a specialist for his back, we need several items to make his outside stall perfect for him (like a swamp cooler, etc) and we desperately need more volunteers. Sincerely, Ann
P.S. I would like to thank Last Chance Corral for their advice and taking the time with me to answer my many questions. They were one of my first calls when we brought him home that day. And, they took the time again, when I had more questions, the other day. I consider them to be experts on foals with no Mama. They do amazing work and mentioned that they are on foal #163 just this year!!!
