🐾💉 A Little Vaccine Can Prevent a BIG Problem! 💉🐾

⚠️ Leptospirosis cases are on the rise, and we want pet owners to be aware!

Leptospirosis (Lepto) is a potentially life-threatening bacterial infection that affects dogs and other animals. What makes it especially concerning? It’s ZOONOTIC, meaning it can spread from animals to humans! 🦠

🐕 How do dogs get Lepto?
Dogs can become infected through contact with water, soil, or surfaces contaminated with urine from infected wildlife or other animals.

💦 Puddles, standing water, and muddy areas can all be potential sources of exposure!

🏡 Think your dog isn’t at risk because they don’t go hiking or swimming? Think again!

Even dogs that spend most of their time in their own backyard can be exposed. Wildlife such as raccoons, rodents, and other animals can carry the bacteria into residential areas.

🚨 Why is Lepto so dangerous?
Leptospirosis can cause:
🐾 Acute kidney injury or kidney failure
🐾 Liver damage or liver failure
🐾 Fever, vomiting, and lethargy
🐾 Severe illness that can sometimes be fatal

❤️ The good news? Leptospirosis is vaccine-preventable!

The Lepto vaccine is recommended for ALL dogs, regardless of breed, size, lifestyle, or where they live. Vaccination significantly reduces the risk of serious illness and helps protect our canine companions.

October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month! 🐾

There are so many incredible dogs in shelters waiting for one very important thing: a family to call their own! 💜

If you’ve been thinking about adding a four-legged family member, this month is the perfect time to visit one of our amazing local shelters and see who might just be looking for you 🐶🏡

Lakeview is proud to partner with local shelters, including Elmbrook Humane Society, to help newly adopted pets start their next chapter off on the right paw. Pets adopted through our participating shelter partners are eligible for a FREE shelter adoption exam at Lakeview within 30 days of adoption! 🩺🐾

And if your home is already full (or now just isn’t the right time to adopt) you can still make a HUGE difference! Consider donating food, supplies, toys, funds, or even your time to a local shelter. Every little bit helps provide food, medical care, enrichment, comfort, and love to pets while they wait for their forever homes 💕

🐱 CASE SPOTLIGHT: Curiosity Got the Cat… a Dryer Sheet?! 🧺😳

Tito came to Lakeview because he just wasn’t feeling like himself. The culprit? A dryer sheet that became a GI foreign body and required surgery to remove 🩺 Cats are curious creatures, and sometimes that curiosity means eating things that were definitely not on the menu! 🐈

This case is a great reminder of two important things:

🔹 Watch what your cat has access to:
If something can fit in their mouth, there’s always a chance an adventurous kitty may decide to taste-test it. String, ribbon, hair ties, rubber bands, small toys, and other everyday household items, like dryer sheets (Tito says the moonlight breeze flavor is the best 😅) can be tempting to chew or swallow.

AND

🔹 Know your cat’s “normal”:
Cats are particularly good at hiding illness. Sometimes the first sign that something is wrong isn’t dramatic. It’s simply that your cat is acting a little… off.

Keep an eye out for subtle changes like:
🐾 Eating less or refusing food
🐾 Vomiting or repeated gagging/retching
🐾 Hiding more than usual
🐾 Sleeping more or being less interactive
🐾 Changes in litter box habits
🐾 Sitting or lying in unusual positions
🐾 Not wanting to be touched or picked up
🐾 Changes in grooming
🐾 Just generally not acting like themselves

Foreign bodies can cause dangerous intestinal obstructions, and the sooner we identify a problem, the better chance we have of treating it before serious complications develop.

Trust your gut (pun intended) when something seems different. You know your pet better than anyone! Sometimes “he just isn’t acting right” is exactly the reason we need to see them.

And maybe keep those dryer sheets somewhere the cat can’t add them to the dinner menu 😹

One foot, two foot, red foot… THUMB FOOT?! 🐾😂

It's a fun little case of “cat thumb”! 👍 Some cats are born with extra toes, a condition called polydactyly, and sometimes the beans just grow into non-apposable thumbs 🤷‍♀️ This is what no one in the vet field calls the deluxe package 🤣

When the boss is away… Maggie will find a way 😂🐾

Because naturally, when any team member goes on vacation, the pet sitters end up bringing our pets in🤦‍♀️😂 Apparently Maggie heard mom was out of town and thought, “Perfect! Now seems like an excellent time to need medical attention” 🙃😑

Huge shoutout to employee pets for keeping everyone on their toes 💜
