When we are talking about our Jim Kelly Memorial Farm Cat Program, this picture represents everything it is about. Colonies of cats that have exploded beyond what a person could pay in normal veterinary fees to spay and neuter them all. Over the last 3 years, we have worked together to spay and neuter 26 cats in this colony alone. This has been a collaborative effort. There is the farm owner, who feeds and cares for these cats that have constantly shown up on the farm. She has put in the effort to catch them and bring them in and has spent many of her own dollars to control this group. There is our contribution, taking no profit to surgically alter, vaccinate, deworm, and treat them for ear mites, fleas, and ticks, and basic infections. There is Dr. Mundt taking no salary for it. But then there is all of YOU!!!! Because many of you have contributed financially to our program and provided sponsorships for cats like these, we are able to help people keep huge colonies like these in check and healthy.

Here's a fun and CRAZY story:

This is Woodstock.

Woodstock is 32 years old. (**Woodstock is the only bird Dr.Mundt sees now, DCVS does not see birds regularly)

Shortly after opening, we received a message from a lady who shared this story with us.

Woodstock's owner, Ann, bought him from a girl who raised cockatiels and lovebirds and brought them to school with her during the day to hand-feed them. The girl was 14 years old, and his human mom worked at Jefferson Junior High, where she attended.

Turns out the girl was Dr. MUNDT!!!

We have no idea how she got away with this in Junior and High School, but no one ever had a problem with it, and everyone enjoyed seeing and holding the birds.

Even more fun in that story is that the momma bird flew into Dr. Mundt's backyard when she was in grade school, seemingly out of nowhere, and landed on her. Already animal crazy, she was ecstatic! She counted up all her babysitting money and bought a cage from Kennedy's Aquarium downtown, which sits on a shelf in the back of the clinic today. It was $90, which was a lot of money back then. Her family placed an ad in the lost-and-found section of the newspaper, and despite several people coming to look at the bird, it wasn't theirs.

What a weird thing for us to have to say, but we are on a waiting list for new clients right now?!!! I never thought we would say that so early in our clinic's timeline, but what a blessing it is to have such a problem. So we are one in and one out as of now as we go through accounts and records. Don't be afraid to contact us, but understand if you are new and your pet is really sick we are unlikely to be able to get you in immediately. We work really hard to try to give our established clients the best attention we can, so they will always be our priority.

Just another reminder... with the current heat advisory, please, please... do not take your geriatric, smoosh-face, laryngeal paralysis, collapsing-trachea, or heart-failure dogs out for long walks this week. Even if your dog doesn't suffer from these problems, we need to be really, really careful.
A dog's only really effective means of dissipating heat is through panting. Panting works via evaporation, air exchange, and blooding cooling. Even early, with 80% + humidity, it's very difficult for dogs to cool down via this route.

Outside the obvious symptoms of collapse with heat exhaustion and stroke, diarrhea and vomiting can also be a consequence of too much heat.

Update: The answer is Cuterebra (botfly) larvae season! This is usually in late summer to early fall. The female cuterebra fly lays her eggs around the opening of a rodent or rabbit burrow. When a cat investigates the burrow, the larvae can get on the cat and enter the body through the nose, mouth, or, rarely, a wound. It then burrows under the skin to various locations on the body, most often the head and neck area, where it grows into a surprisingly large grub. The breathing hole is the tell-tale sign! These should be removed by a veterinarian and not squeezed (popping the worm inside the pet can cause a large reaction). The veterinarian will enlarge the breathing hole to facilitate removing the bot and then clean the wound. Antibiotics may or may not be needed depending on the degree of infection/ inflammation in the surrounding tissues.

Every pet deserves fresh air and access to unfiltered sunlight; this includes your indoor cat! Just think about this... we take cats who evolved over thousands of years and put them in our tiny apartment or home, and we take away their natural behavior of stalking and hunting prey all day for small meals. No access to fresh air, no access to sunlight that doesn't come through your uv blocking windows. They are prisoners! Then we wonder why they are overweight, lie around all day, and even p*e in inappropriate places as their mental health declines. But the alternative of being an indoor-outdoor cat leaves them open to injury and is often illegal in cities. I got one of these last year for our house cats, and they absolutely love it. We move it to different places. Make sure half is shaded, and half is in the sun. They absolutely love it and are now trained to walk on leashes to get to it. We put a litter box in the center and leave them out up to a few hours a day, depending on the weather. There are many versions, but I found this one awesome and well-made. We are on year 2, and it's held up well. Photos in comments of my kitties in theirs eating fresh-picked catnip.
