Paws Giving Independence NFP

Paws Giving Independence NFP Saving a life to change a life. Our purpose is to train service/facility dogs and place them free of charge. Visit our website for more info!

Paws Giving Independence is run completely on public donations. We are unique because our service dogs are placed free of charge and we currently have no paid staff. That is why we need your help to keep our program running. Many of our dogs are all rescued from shelters but we need your support to pay for the vet bills and everyday care.

Enrichment isn’t just fun, it’s foundational! 🐾

Slow feeders and puzzle toys help our future assistance dogs build confidence, problem-solving skills, focus, and healthy eating habits one meal at a time. Every sniff, lick, and nudge is part of the journey toward becoming a calm, capable partner 💙

Skill Check Featuring… Honey! 🦮💕

Here is one of our service dogs in training Miss Honey demonstrating some advanced skills! The first skill Honey is showing is “find chair”. Honey guides her handler to an open chair which helps individuals for a variety of different reasons. The second skill Honey is demonstrating is “find exit”. Honey again is leading her handler to a door so that her handler can leave the space she is in. These are some super cool advanced skills that our service dogs in training can accomplish! Each time Honey completes a skill she is marked with the “Yes” cue to know that she completed the skill correctly and is rewarded with a treat! Way to go Honey! 🍯🐾

Thank you Fresh Cravings Salsa for sponsoring Honey and trusting us with her care! ❤️

And the correct answer was…Hudson!

Hudson is a one year old black lab who is in his second stage of training! He has been advancing his skills and loves to retrieve items, open doors, and help put clothes in the laundry basket! 🧺🐕‍🦺

🕒 Training a service dog is a process that requires dedication, time, and a lot of patience. Not every dog is suitable to become a service dog, as there may be underlying health or temperament issues that could hinder their ability to perform the necessary tasks. In such cases, these dogs find their true happiness as beloved family pets.

🐶 Our dogs go through an extensive training period, typically lasting around two years. They live with our trainers during this time and undergo rigorous training and testing to ensure they acquire the skills needed to become reliable service dogs. Once the training is complete, our focus shifts to finding the perfect recipient who can benefit from the unique abilities of each dog. Due to this process, we are unable to train your dog through our program.

Our primary training areas are wheelchair/mobility assistance and medical response, such as recognizing a seizure and providing help during a medical issue. We do not train psychiatric service dogs, diabetic alert dogs, full sight dogs or allergy alert dogs. Each type of service dog requires specialized training tailored to their specific tasks.

🏢 Recipients of our service dogs are required to attend twelve weekly classes in Peoria, IL, before getting a dog. However, if you reside outside our area, there's still hope! You can visit the assitancedogsinternational.org website to find accredited programs in your local area. They can provide you with the necessary guidance and assistance in your journey to finding a service dog. Remember, the journey may take time, but the bond formed with a well-trained service dog is invaluable.

🐾 What Is a Service Dog Furlough? 🐾

Just like people, service dogs sometimes need a temporary break from training at Helping Paws to try their training in a real world setting.

Coco’s furlough was spent with a teacher, which gave her the opportunity to continue practicing all of her skills in a real school environment while also getting consistency, structure, and extra exposure to everyday situations students and staff encounter. Coco love it!
