The technical reason for 'kitten explosion season'.

Female cats are polyesterous which means that they have multiple estrus cycles during the breeding season. As the amount of daylight begins to increase at the winter solstice, the reproductive cycle of intact females kicks into gear, and most will go into heat by late January. A female cat will keep coming back into heat every 1 to 2 weeks until she gets pregnant, or the amount of daylight decreases (generally in October). The feline gestation period is about 63 days, so the first kittens of the season will start arriving in late March.

NOW is the ideal time to spay and neuter feral and stray cats to get ahead of kitten season and end the breeding cycle before it starts.

Hmmm... Just happened with one of our TNR kitties from a local Clinic. 🤦 If you see a right ear tip, it might mean they just made a mistake at the clinic. 😬

Many comments about left male, right female. The original program specifically states “Always the left ear.” Just because Vets want to be different or think they know better, it’s harder on us trappers, caretakers and rescuers. But since some have to be different, we now have to check both ears and not just for a tip any more, but a notch, which has been proven to look more like a battle scar.

Male? Female? Once neutered, does it really matter? They’re happier, healthier and are now safe from so many deadly diseases.

Stray Spay Days are an important part of our mission to get ahead of the overpopulation crisis. Every cat we spay or neuter means fewer kittens born into a life of uncertainty, illness, abandonment and suffering. 💚

⚠️ Please plan ahead! Once these spots are gone, they’re gone. We do our best to accommodate as many cats as possible, but our clinic has limited surgical capacity and these special days fill quickly.

If you’ve been feeding a stray, caring for a community cat, or have cats showing up at your home, getting them altered is one of the most effective things you can do to help.

Baldwin County residents... 😺

Our neighboring counties that help 'snip' the over populated and procreating community cat crisis are Baldwin and Santa Rosa. What a great plan.... ✂️ the problem where it begins.
This is great for the people that live in those counties; maybe one day, Escambia County will follow suit. 🤞😹

🐾 Dates/locations for the next Stray Spay Days ! 🐾

It’s been a bit since we’ve posted dates. The truth is, the appointments have been filling so quickly, without posting them —often 2–3 weeks in advance—that it didn’t seem fair to advertise dates when there was no availability.

We’re incredibly grateful for the overwhelming response! These clinics have been a huge success, and we truly wish we could offer more each month. As a small nonprofit with limited funding, staff and volunteers, less surgical days, we’re simply not at that point yet—we’ve made several adjustments to our scheduling to shift focus on those that need us most and here in Baldwin County.

There are still a few appointments available for Stray Days this month …they will go quickly! And right now, we especially need MALE cats.
We know everyone tends to focus on getting female cats spayed, and understandably so. But male cats play an equally important role in the overpopulation crisis. One unneutered male can impregnate multiple females in a single day. The more male cats we have scheduled, the more surgeries we can often complete during a clinic day, allowing us to help even more cats overall.
