Something to consider when you're adopting a free kitten. Ringworm is very common and most often not easily noticed. 😿 But under the black light, ringworm lights up.

𝗣𝗶𝗰𝗸𝗲𝗱 𝘂𝗽 𝗮 “𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗸𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻” 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗙𝗮𝗰𝗲𝗯𝗼𝗼𝗸 and now you’re noticing a bald spot?

Maybe it’s flaky.
Maybe it’s crusty.
Maybe it’s spreading.

You might be dealing with ringworm 🪱.
And despite the name… it’s not a worm at all.

Ringworm is a fungal infection that’s extremely common in kittens, especially kittens born outside, living in colonies, or coming from overcrowded environments.

Signs can include:
⚠️Circular patches of hair loss
⚠️ Flaky or crusty skin
⚠️ Broken hairs
⚠️ Itching
⚠️ Bald spots on the face, ears, paws, or tail
⚠️ Often glows under a black light (but not always)

The good news?
✅ It’s treatable.

The less good news?
😬 It’s contagious to other pets AND people.

𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝗮𝘆:
𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼 𝘀𝘂𝗰𝗵 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗳𝗿𝗲𝗲 𝗸𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻.

Because 𝙩𝙝𝙖𝙩 “𝙛𝙧𝙚𝙚” 𝙠𝙞𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙣 𝙘𝙖𝙣 𝙦𝙪𝙞𝙘𝙠𝙡𝙮 𝙩𝙪𝙧𝙣 𝙞𝙣𝙩𝙤:
💰 Vet visits
💰 Medications
💰 Special shampoos
💰 Environmental cleaning
💰 Treatment for your other pets
💰 Vaccines
💰 Spay & Neuter surgery unless you want 40 more cats

And while shelters and rescues aren’t perfect, animals coming through those programs are often examined, monitored, and treated before going home. Someone is looking for these issues before they become your issue.

No judgment if you’ve already picked up a free kitten. We get it. They’re adorable.

The sooner ringworm is identified and treated, the easier it is to manage 👍🏼.

Because “free” gets expensive real fast.

I was very fortunate to meet one of downtown Pensacola's Seville street cats, Romin. It was a good day for both of us...

Days before our meeting, neighbors and businesses around summoned and beaconed for his rescue. This kitty was 'running out of gas' lethargic and in very poor condition. When I could, I'd grab my trap and set search for him... Never found him. 😿
There was a time or two I thought I'd get stopped for trespassing. 😹

A week ago he finally found my yard to lay in wait for help. Well, he came to the right place. 😼 Was this a coincidence or guidance from a higher being? 👁️

Anyway, fast forward, Romin is still in my cat enclosure and recovering from his clinical neuter, vaccinations, and treatment for a large infected wound. In addition to flea and parasite treatments, he tested negative for heartworms, FIV, and leukemia. His ears were cleaned and he now models a left ear-tip (AKA love-bite).

I'll release him tomorrow morning but he's welcome to stay and be a courtyard kitty 😻 (It's in his Seville district, so he'll be right at home). I have a feeling he'll leave (hence is name); we shall see.

So, if you're in the area and see this sweet orange soul, be kind and offer him a can of Fancy Feast salmon and a fresh bowl of water.

Community Cats do not choose this life style but they don't have a choice.

TNVR (trap, neuter, vaccinate, return) makes a difference for kitties like Romin. 🐈

TNVR makes a difference for our neighborhood and community by reducing the procreation of community cats. After a kitty is neutered, fighting and other annoyances will most likely cease. Community Kittens born under these conditions very seldom survive; and they suffer because they're little bodies cannot endure.

This pretty girl is all healthy and spayed. Just because she didn't make the lap cat scene, she deserves a chance... 😿

Will someone please adopt Spooky. She was TNR a few weeks ago and is looking for a new home. She did good inside, but she did not warm up to people. She needs a window or a barn or a shop. We really do not want to send her back to the gas station. Pensacola. No fee. Thank you.
