šŸ«› Green Beans: A Surprisingly Powerful Snack for Dogs 🐶 (and cats, if they’ll eat ā€˜em).

Looking for a simple, crunchy, low-calorie treat for your dog? Open the refrigerator. Green beans are one of my favorite whole-food snacks—and there’s a lot more packed into these little green pods than most people realize.

šŸ«› Low in calories, big on nutrition:
Green beans provide fiber, vitamins, minerals, and an impressive collection of naturally occurring plant compounds, making them a great alternative to many highly processed treats.

🌿 Packed with protective polyphenols:
Green beans contain rutin, quercetin, kaempferol, catechins, and phenolic acids such as chlorogenic, caffeic, and ferulic acid. These compounds help combat oxidative stress and have demonstrated antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity.

šŸ‘€ Naturally rich in carotenoids:
Lutein, beta-carotene, and zeaxanthin add another layer of antioxidant protection and help support cellular and eye health.

🦠 Fiber + plant compounds = gut support:
Green beans provide dietary fiber that can help support healthy digestion and the gut microbiome. They also contain saponins, phytosterols, chlorophyll, polyamines, plant peptides, and other bioactive compounds researchers continue to investigate for their metabolic and cellular benefits.

🩸 Interesting metabolic research:
Compounds in green beans have demonstrated alpha-glucosidase-inhibiting activity in laboratory research—a mechanism that can slow carbohydrate digestion and moderate post-meal glucose responses. There are no published studies that beans are harmful

🐾 How I serve them:
Plain! Raw or lightly steamed, depending on your dog’s chewing ability and preference. Skip the butter, salt, sauces, and seasonings.

Green beans shouldn’t replace a nutritionally complete diet, but as a treat or topper, they’re a wonderful example of why I love using real food whenever possible. There are no published studies showing beans are in any way harmful for dogs or cats 🄳.

Sometimes one of the healthiest treats you can give your dog is already sitting in your refrigerator. šŸ’ššŸ«›

You’ve probably heard that garlic is toxic to pets, but science says otherwise. My latest article takes a closer look at the research, including the strong safety data on aged garlic extract in dogs and the science exploring its potential roles in:
ā¤ļø Cardiovascular health
🦠 Immune and antimicrobial support
šŸ›”ļø Antioxidant and detoxification pathways
🦷 Oral health
🐜 Natural parasite and tick control
🐾 Inflammatory skin conditions
🧬 And even cancer prevention
A 12-week study in dogs found no adverse effects from aged garlic extract, even at doses substantially higher than typical supplemental amounts, and researchers observed increased activity of the Nrf2 antioxidant pathway.
Did you know that garlic is also a powerful parasite and tick repellent? Learn all about the safe use of garlic for pets in my latest article, link in comments šŸ§„.

🧠 OLDER DOG CONFUSED, ANXIOUS, UP AT NIGHT OR HAVING ACCIDENTS?

Changes inside an aging dog’s brain may begin years before obvious cognitive problems appear.

Research highlighted in a 2025 systematic review found that by age 6, glucose metabolism in some regions of the Beagle brain can decline by as much as 25%.

Glucose is normally the brain’s primary fuel. As dogs age, their brains can become less efficient at using it.

But there’s another fuel the brain can use: KETONES.

🄄 That’s where MCTs come in.
MCTs are rapidly converted into ketones, providing aging brain cells with an alternative source of energy.

A very high-quality trial, highlighted in the 2025 systematic review published in GeroScience, studied older dogs fed an enriched diet containing MCTs + DHA/EPA omega-3s, and after just 90 days, dogs improved across EVERY cognitive dysfunction category evaluated, including:

šŸŒ™ Sleep/wake problems
😟 Anxiety
🧠 Confusion/disorientation
šŸ  House-training problems
🧩 Learning and memory
šŸ• Activity and social interaction

🐟 So how can you add some of these nutrients to your dog’s bowl?

Dr. Karen Becker’s Roe Megaā„¢ combines MCT oil with marine EPA + DHA from sustainably sourced herring caviar, but there’s another fascinating nutrition connection: LP815ā„¢, a probiotic strain in Dr. Becker’s Primitive Probioticsā„¢, has also been studied in dogs, with research showing improvements in anxiety-related behaviors and more consistent sleep.

šŸ„• Why Carrots Are a Smart Snack for Your Pet — The Science 🐾:

That crunchy orange treat is actually a little pharmacy of plant compounds. Here’s what the research says:

🌈 Color = Different Superpowers
Carrot color isn’t just pretty — it signals different nutrients:
• Orange = alpha- & beta-carotene
• Purple/black = anthocyanins + the highest polyphenol/antioxidant load
• Red = lycopene
• Yellow = lutein (an eye-supporting nutrient)

šŸ›”ļø A Real Immune Boost (Proven in Dogs)
In controlled studies, dogs fed beta-carotene had stronger immune responses ; higher helper-immune cells and more antibodies. Dogs genuinely absorb beta-carotene into their blood and immune cells.

šŸ”„ Nature’s Anti-Inflammatories
Carrots contain unusual compounds called falcarinol and falcarindiol. In lab studies these calmed inflammatory signals in cells (lowering IL-6, TNF-alpha, and nitric oxide).

🦠 Happy Gut Bacteria
Carrots’ soluble fiber (pectin) is food for the good bugs in your pet’s gut. Pets need fiber for a healthy microbiome. Bacteria ferment it into short-chain fatty acids that support the gut barrier, calm inflammation, and help regulate metabolism.

šŸ¬ Low in Sugar — and No, They Don’t ā€œFeed Yeastā€
Carrots taste a little sweet, but the actual sugar per serving is small. A carrot has a low ā€œglycemic load,ā€ meaning a normal treat-sized portion does not spike blood sugar. The yeast overgrowth people worry about is driven by refined/free glucose in the gut, not by the modest natural sugars in a whole, fiber-rich vegetable — in lab models it’s concentrated glucose that fuels yeast growth. Bonus: carrots’ fiber actually feeds the good bacteria instead.

šŸ‘€ Eye Support
Lutein and beta-carotene are antioxidants that help protect the eye from oxidative stress.

āœ… Pet-Parent Tips
Offer carrots raw for a satisfying crunch (great for teething puppies, too!) or lightly cooked, depending on your dog (and what kitties prefer). Steamed, mashed carrots (mixed with bone broth) work great on a lick mat, and slicing mini carrots into thin rings makes great low-calorie training treats for dieting dogs šŸ„•
āž”ļø 1 inch of carrot for every 3 pounds of body weight per day.

🦓 CBD MAY DO MORE THAN EASE ARTHRITIS PAIN... IT MAY ALSO HELP SUPPORT THE JOINT ITSELF.

A new 2026 peer-reviewed systematic review and meta-analysis published in Pain Research and Management looked at 26 studies on cannabinoids and osteoarthritis, including five randomized placebo-controlled studies in dogs with naturally occurring arthritis.

When the dog studies were combined, CBD significantly reduced arthritis pain severity, with studies also reporting improvements in mobility and quality of life.

But what really caught our attention was what researchers found happening inside the joint. Preclinical research suggests cannabinoids may:

šŸ”„ Reduce inflammatory signals
šŸ›”ļø Reduce cartilage-destroying enzymes
🦓 Support cartilage-building proteins like type II collagen
šŸ• Support more comfortable movement

And type II collagen is especially interesting to us because it’s the primary collagen found in joint cartilage and the reason we included UC-IIĀ® undenatured type II collagen in Mobility Matrixā„¢.

For pet parents who don’t have access to CBD, Dr. Karen Becker formulated Mobility Matrixā„¢ to support joint health and mobility through multiple pathways, with ingredients including UC-IIĀ® undenatured type II collagen, eggshell membrane, creatine, glucosamine, MSM, and hyaluronic acid to support cartilage, connective tissue, muscles, and comfortable movement. 🐾
