Conveniently located in the community of Penryn, California, just northeast of Sacramento, Loomis Basin Equine Medical Center is a 25-acre facility (with full medical and surgical capabilities) comprised of a 6 stall ICU, two main barns, surgery suite, 3 exam rooms, and extensive arenas, paddocks, and other facilities. LBEMC has been serving Northern California for over 40 years. Today, our group of practices includes 10 locations: Loomis Basin Equine Medical Center in Penryn, CA, Yuba-Sutter Division, Wilton Division, El Dorado Division, Sierra Equine (Penn Valley), Amador Equine (Sutter Creek), Napa Valley Equine, North Coast Veterinary Hospital (Fortuna & Arcata), Tri-County Vet (Gilroy), Valley Equine (Gilroy), Equine Medical Assoc (Lake Forest). There are ~30 equine veterinarians within the group comprised of generalists & specialists in surgery, internal medicine, sports medicine, & critical care. All of our practices combined provide ambulatory veterinary care to most of California! Our doctors bring a combination of specialty training focusing on continuing education, energy, and a commitment to quality health care for horses. Our associate doctors are selected for their high professional standards, humanitarian spirit, and specific interest in horses. 👩‍⚕️We loved hosting the 2nd year students from the Yuba College Veterinary Technology program at our clinic this week. Our own Brittney Strong, RVT worked with the students as they had the opportunity to work hands-on learning and perfecting skills that are vital for a successful career as an RVT.
📝Those skills included:
-Applying a distal (lower) limb wrap
-Giving oral meds
-Taking TPR (Temperature, Pulse, Respiration)
-Wrapping a tail for a re**al or vaginal exam
…to name a few!

Dr Sarah Mercer’s wonderful retired 28 year old warmblood, Coffee, was a willing and patient teacher for these students as well. Apparently his favorite part of playing patient was being administered syringes of applesauce🍎😆

❓Did you know that your horse’s stomach is
producing acid 24 hours a day?
Unlike your stomach that only produces acid when you eat or drink, to help aid digestion, your horse was built to graze 23 hours a day. This is why even horses that live a relatively low-stress life can still develop ulcers.

Some signs of equine ulcers might include:

☑️ Recurrent mild colic
☑️ Reactiveness to being saddled/having the girth tightened
☑️ Ear Pinning/Poor attitude
☑️ Weight loss
☑️ Less interest in grain

If you are concerned that your horse may be suffering from ulcers, the only way to accurately diagnose equine ulcers is through gastroscopy.

Equine Metabolic Syndrome (EMS) and insulin dysregulation are common concerns that can have a big impact on your horse’s health—especially their risk for laminitis.

🐎 𝐃𝐢𝐝 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐍𝐎𝐓 𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐂𝐮𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠’𝐬 (𝐏𝐏𝐈𝐃) 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐚 𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐫𝐜𝐨𝐚𝐭?
When most owners think of Cushing's (PPID) in horses, they think of a long, dull haircoat, that doesn’t shed well, as the key sign. While this is a strong indicator that your horse should be tested, this is unfortunately a sign of more advanced disease. Some other signs you might see are:

Some of the best practices when trying to prevent sand colic include:

✅ Feeding your horse on rubber mats that are swept off regularly
✅ Horses on dry lot should be fed small meals more often and consider using a slow feeder to extend meals
✅ Rotate pastures so they do not become overgrazed (too short, dry, and patchy)

During the month of August we’re discussing a common late Summer - early Fall issue that can cause recurrent colic in horses… Sand Colic. In this video Dr. Langdon Fielding, of the Loomis Basin Equine Medical Group, explains more about this painful ailment.
Floating manure to check for sand is a great first line of defense but abdominal radiographs are the most accurate way to assess your horse’s sand load.

😣𝐃𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐢𝐧 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐬𝐞?
It's important to recognize signs that your horse may have a build up of sand (ground debris) in their stomach and GI tract. By recognizing it early we hope that you will be able to avoid a full sand colic episode in your horse. Horses with a large sand burden risk impaction and even blockage that can require surgical intervention.

𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐬𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐚𝐫𝐞:
✅ loose manure/diarrhea
✅ intermittent (recurrent) colic
✅ poor hair coat
✅ weight loss
….to name a few.
