First, this broadens the horse’s understanding and acceptance of yielding thoughtfully to a physical pressure. This is applicable to any form of “direct feel” we would use in communication through our other tools, like a halter or bridle.
Second, this helps prepare a horse to be hobbled safely, which is an extremely useful thing to be familiar with when riding outside an arena. It also means they’ll be less likely to panic if they step in loose wire or get caught in a fence.
Thirdly, This is a great way to prepare one to have their feet handled or to address issues with one that doesn’t understand how to have its feet handled well.
