Howie demos just what we’re looking for when we ask for proper engagement over poles 😇

If I were to ask you, “What bounce do you want to see in the horse over pole patterns?” would you know where to point? When you work your kiddo, do you know where to watch?

There’s no shame in admitting you don’t really know what to look for beyond a horse just getting over the poles without tripping into oblivion. That’s certainly where it starts! Rhythm first - everything else follows. But…the horse’s body gives us clues as to how they’re handling the physical challenge we’ve placed in front of them and from there we can figure out how to help increase correct posture and encourage proper movement.

And so, I watch the *drumroll please* NECK! I start at the poll and as the horse goes around I track all the way down to where the neck meets the shoulder. There’s a fancy muscle that lives there called the cervical trapezius. It’s primary functions? Lifting + supporting the neck, assisting in raising the shoulder, and stabilizing the entire top line during movement. So, I watch this muscle - if it’s tight I know that we are holding tension in the top line; if it’s bouncy and loose even over the poles I know we are pushing from the hind as opposed to pulling from the front and our top line is freed up to balance posture. This means no compensation through the withers and shoulders.

Watch as Howie comes around - see the bounce? 👀 That’s one happy cervical trapezius! And that means Howie is not cheating the exercise but instead engaging with it so he can build correct muscle.

Good work, Howard 👏🏻

If your massage therapist’s hands don’t look like this did they even really massage? 🤔

One of the most common things I hear from owners during a massage is, “Oh my gosh, I’m so sorry I didn’t realize how dirty my horse was!” My response? This is just proof that I’m doing my job; NOT a sign that you don’t groom well enough.

Massage is a natural way to bring oils to the surface of the skin. And with the oil comes the dirt. You can groom all day long - I can massage for five minutes and get more dirt out than you will. It’s not a personal thing…it’s just a massage thing! As we massage, we stimulate small glands called sebaceous glands. That’s just a super fancy way of saying “oil-producing glands”. The glands are stimulated, the oils inside release and rise, and they condition the skin to create that shiny effect that we all know and love (and groom so relentlessly for). They also make your therapist’s hands a dirt magnet and that’s ok!

If your therapist leaves looking like this? It’s a compliment to our work. It’s a lil massage masterpiece not something to apologize over. Your horse isn’t dirty - your massage therapist is just…an artist 🤪

By the time somebody asks me, “When should I start working with my foal?” my answer usually is, “Yesterday.” 🙃

Don’t wait. From the moment they are Earthside, these foals are able and willing to learn and we should be there to teach them. They are not born knowing how to navigate a human world or relationship; they need us to help them learn and the earlier we do the better off they are.

The key to a successful learning environment for a baby? Short and sweet sessions (think 15-30 minutes); one goal at a time (think about getting just one foot to do one thing); LOTS of breaks + scritches; Mama near by and calm. It’s not about big breakthroughs with the littles - it’s about small victories and tiny tries that build consistently into a soft, responsive, and confident kiddo.

Teach them young; thank me when they’re old. Good boy, Teddy 👏🏻

If healthy fascia makes your whole morning? You may be an equine nerd 😆

I think sometimes we get really wrapped up in highlighting the signs of pain, imbalance, weakness, compensation, etc. I know as a body worker myself I spend the majority of my days in critique mode; looking for and pointing out signs that something is not quite right. It comes from a good place…we want to identify the problem so we can solve it. But sometimes we get tunnel vision.

So, I find it just as important to remember to look for and point out the signs that something is right. We have to train our eyes to notice the good just as much as we notice the bad. And Liam here is an example of some really happy cervical connective tissue! The telltale sign? That smoooooooth glide of Liam’s skin as I move my thumb. Notice how low the effects run from the top of his neck to the bottom. His tissue feels elastic not rigid; slides easily without sticking in any places. And then of course that face. No one can deny a relaxed eye 🤣

Makes for a very happy massage therapist and an even happier owner.

📌
Liam received a deep tissue massage + red light therapy - a power combo for a power kiddo 👏🏻

This is Boone. This is Boone riding on the road back to the barn from the trail. This is where Boone used to jig alllllllllllll the way home. This is now where Boone walks steady and calm. This is Boone learning to rely on Boone.

Your horse should walk back to the barn like Boone. And if they don’t? You need to ask WHY. And then you need to help your horse from there. Because it is very rarely as simple as “barn sour”. Often times, there’s a deeper insecurity or lack of regulation or missing piece in the foundation. Whatever it may be, once it’s properly addressed a horse can become quite content with the ebb and flow of challenges, quite happy in their independence, and quite confident in being curious. And suddenly back to the barn doesn’t really feel so important to them.

Good work, Booney Tunes 🤪

Moose and I reporting for duty to remind you that “just trail riding” doesn’t “just happen” - it’s a learned skill that gets better with practice 😎

This is one of my absolute favorite exercises for the trail kiddos. I put them on as loose of a rein as possible (one that if I lifted my reins I’d immediately have connection but if I keep my hand lowered the bit is totally quiet) and I challenge myself to use only my eye line, seat, and then, very last, leg to guide us through the batch of trees. In a perfect world, I’d be able to simply look in the direction I want my horses feet to go and shift my seat to gently push them over, under, or to the side of any trail obstacle. That perfect world starts here in the practice world.

Nice job, Moose 🫎

Wow wow wow. In less than 24 hours, we filled every single available slot for July 👏🏻

We have 3 kiddos coming for the exercise program, one kiddo for c**t starting, and one kiddo for trail training. It’s about to be a super summer y’all 😎 If you wanted a spot but missed out? Connect with us via messenger or phone! We are currently accepting deposits for September.

It does not go unnoticed the amount of support and trust we get from our equine community. Grateful is an understatement and we can’t wait to see what the future brings.

Stay tuned for some pretty cool updates on those that signed up for July…we’ve got a new way of getting educational content, sharing progress, and explaining the training. Here’s to an equine summer camp like no other 💪🏻
