⚠️ Important Screwworm Update from The Sniff Squad ⚠️
Due to the growing concerns surrounding New World Screwworm, The Sniff Squad will not be deploying our K9 teams to known infected or quarantine areas at this time. While we understand how urgent missing pet and missing person cases can be, protecting our dogs from exposure is critical to ensuring they can continue serving families in the future.
🐾 What is Screwworm? 🐾
New World Screwworm is a parasitic fly whose larvae (maggots) feed on the living tissue of warm-blooded animals. Unlike typical maggots that feed on dead tissue, screwworm larvae can invade wounds, causing severe pain, infection, tissue damage, and even death if left untreated.
🐶 How to Protect Your Pets 🐶
✔️ Check your pets regularly for cuts, scrapes, tick bites, and other wounds.
✔️ Clean and monitor any injuries promptly.
✔️ Keep wounds covered when possible and seek veterinary care if healing seems delayed.
✔️ Watch for signs such as excessive licking, foul-smelling wounds, swelling, drainage, or visible larvae.
✔️ Stay up to date on veterinary recommendations and regional advisories.
✔️ Be especially vigilant when traveling with pets to areas where screwworm has been reported.
We know this may impact some requests for assistance, and we appreciate your understanding as we prioritize the health of our working dogs. We will continue monitoring the situation closely and will provide updates as more information becomes available.
