When we speak about the welfare of horses, we often focus on their physical needs. Good nutrition, veterinary care, appropriate shelter, exercise and sound management. All of these are essential, but there is another part of a horse's wellbeing that deserves just as much consideration.
The quality of the life they experience when we are not involved.
What does their world look like beyond the arena, the stable, the training session or the time we spend with them?
Do they have meaningful relationships with other horses? Can they move freely, explore their environment, make choices, engage in natural behaviours and experience the security of belonging to a herd?
Do they have opportunities to play, to rest deeply, to develop friendships, to seek companionship and to simply experience life on their own terms?
Horses are sentient, socially complex beings with emotional lives, individual preferences and a profound capacity for connection. Their relationships matter to them. Their freedom to express themselves matters. Their experiences of safety, curiosity, pleasure and belonging matter.
And these things matter whether a human is present to witness them or not.
I think one of the most important shifts we can make in horsemanship is to begin considering the horse's experience of being alive, beyond the role they fulfil in our lives.
Because a horse's wellbeing cannot be measured solely by how willingly they work, how beautifully they perform or how comfortably they accommodate our expectations.
The life they live for themselves is every bit as important as the life they share with us.
And surely, if we truly love horses, that should matter enormously.
