Before you begin breeding your dog-
Your first steps will be to ask yourself:
0) Where did my pup come from, and did I purchase breeding rights? Do I have the legal right to breed them?
1) Is my pup an exemplary specimen of my breed?
2) What can I bring to my breed by breeding my pup?
3) Do I have the funds to cover any emergencies(c-section, vaginal collapse, etc)?
4) Is my pup health tested and tested good or better for all the required tests for my breed?
5) What do I plan to breed for? Working dogs, show dogs, farm dogs, pets, etc
6) Is there a want and need for wellbred puppies in my area?
7) Am I informed enough about genetic defects, color issues, breeding and whelping, to take care of a litter?
8)Do I understand the hard work and potential risk of losing puppies, momma dog, and having to bottle feed, etc, and do I realize the very real potential of losing the dam?
9)In the event that the puppies do not sell, do I have the capabilities of keeping the litter for their entire lives? In 2, 5, or 10 years, if a puppy I produced finds itself in need of a home, do I have the capabilities of remaining responsibility for them?
If you find yourself having a hard time answering any of these questions- which really are all your first steps before even thinking about breeding, I would advise against it or further your research of ethical and responsible dog breeding.
We all start somewhere and that somewhere should be the best possible place, especially when it comes to our dearly beloved dogs. We want to breed them with love, intention and purpose.
