**Global Cat Day**

Happy Global Cat Day to every cat parent out there! 🐱

Let's be honest — cats don't ask for permission. They walk into your life, claim your favorite spot on the couch, judge you silently from across the room, and somehow make you feel like you've been chosen for something extraordinary.

We've spent twenty years here at It's a Pet Thing learning what animals need to feel safe, comfortable, and cared for. And we've learned that cats have their own language of trust. It's earned slowly. It's earned with patience, gentle hands, and a whole lot of respect for boundaries.

That's exactly why we decided to add cat grooming to our services. Not because we wanted to fill a gap on our schedule — but because cat parents kept asking, and we realized they deserved someone who understands that a cat isn't a small dog. They need a different pace. A different approach. A different kind of patience.

So today we're celebrating every cat who has ever chosen a human. Every cat who has purred on a lap that was having a terrible day. Every cat who has reminded us that sometimes the best company is quiet company.

Our **October Dog of the Month** competition continues with Iggy — a six-year-old Australian Labradoodle who's been coming to us since puppyhood and still acts like we're his favorite people in the world. 🐺 Happy Wolf Appreciation Week!

Look at your dog real close — really look. That thick double coat, the way they circle three times before settling down, the dramatic sigh when dinner's five minutes late? That's a little wolf in there. 🐾

Every dog, from the mighty shepherd to the tiniest Chihuahua, is a descendant of the gray wolf. And those wild ancestors left their mark: most of our pups inherited that gorgeous double coat wolves grew to survive cold winters. It's warm, it's waterproof — and yes, it sheds. A lot.

That's where we come in. 🛁 At It's a Pet Thing, our deshedding treatments and thorough brushing sessions are basically our way of honoring the wolf within — keeping that beautiful coat healthy, comfortable, and (slightly) off your couch. We care for every coat, wiry or silky, thick or fine, with the patience it deserves.

🐾 This Indigenous Peoples' Day, we're thinking about old ways.

Long before breed standards, show rings, or grooming salons, the first dogs of the Americas were raised and cared for by Indigenous peoples — kept close, looked after, and loved. Most of those original lineages faded when European breeds arrived, but a little of that ancient heritage still runs through the dogs in our tubs today. (Fun fact: the tiny Chihuahua actually carries a trace of pre-Columbian ancestry you won't find in most breeds. 🐕)

Case in point: these two handsome pups, fresh in their bandanas and carrying a little ancient history with them. 🐾

Here at It's a Pet Thing, we're a little old-school ourselves. We still hand-strip our wire-coated dogs by hand — the patient, time-honored way of caring for a coat — because some things are worth doing slowly and well. Every dog who comes through our doors, big or small, wiry or silky, gets that same care and attention.

However your pup traces their roots, they deserve to be looked after with patience and a lot of love. 🛁🤍

**World Mental Health Day**

Every generation has faced its own mental health struggles. We just didn't talk about them. We didn't have the language, the space, or the permission to say "this is hard" and mean it.

Today is about giving ourselves that permission.

Mental health isn't just a crisis headline — it's a human reality. Everyone knows sadness. Everyone knows loneliness. Everyone has felt that quiet weight of despair at some point. What makes the difference isn't avoiding those feelings — it's how we meet them.

For me, it's walking with my dogs in nature. Being with them. Escaping into a good book (escapism always works 😜). Having a pet gives you a reason to get up, a reason to go outside, and a reason to feel less alone.

After twenty years in this profession, I can tell you firsthand — the bond between a person and their animal isn't just sweet. It's genuinely healing. The feeding, the walks, the small daily rituals of caring for another living creature — they give us purpose, routine, a reason to show up.

So if today is a hard day, here's your permission slip: pet your dog. Sit with your cat. Talk to your bird. Take the walk. Let the quiet company of an animal remind you that connection doesn't always need words.

Kickoff for our **October Dog of the Month** competition starts with Gigi, a stunning Standard Poodle and a true regular in our salon! Every two weeks, she arrives ready for her spa day with a smile on her face and a wagging tail.

Her owners say it best:
