Big news from Big Sky!

Our very own Dr. Shelby Peppers, Department of Surgery, recently took home 'Best Scientific Poster Presentation' at the Veterinary Orthopedic Society (VOS) Annual Meeting in Montana, and we couldn't be prouder.

Her research is focused on a very real challenge in veterinary medicine, where some of the most effective nerve blocks for pain management are technically difficult to perform, which can limit access for patients in private practice.

Dr. Peppers is exploring whether tele-guidance – an anesthesiologist coaching a local surgeon in real time over video – can change that.

Spoiler: it's working.

This is what it looks like when a doctor loves their patients AND their profession. The learning never stops, and honestly, that's the whole point.

Her work that reflects something we value deeply at ACCESS Specialty Animal Hospital – Pasadena – continuous learning, clinical improvement, and helping move veterinary medicine forward in ways that benefit patients, pet owners, and the broader veterinary community.

Congratulations, Dr. Peppers! You're the best! 🙂

Now that the word is out about CAVI™ – the Center for Advanced Veterinary Interventions – at ACCESS Specialty Animal Hospital in Pasadena, CA, we’re excited to begin sharing more about what it means and why it matters.

Pictured here is Evan Ross, DVM, MS, DACVIM – cardiologist at ACCESS Pasadena and CAVI team member – speaking with our referring veterinarian community about interventional care for pets. It’s a great example of the collaborative, forward-thinking spirit behind this new offering.

For pet owners, CAVI offers an alternative to traditional surgery by bringing together uniquely trained veterinary specialists, advanced imaging technology, and multidisciplinary collaboration to provide minimally invasive, image-guided procedures that simply haven’t been available in one place, under one roof – until now.

For referring veterinarians, CAVI provides a single, streamlined destination for complex cases, helping make coordination easier for both doctors and clients.

Congratulations to our founder, Dr. Rich Mills, on being inducted into the St. Raphael Academy Hall of Fame.

Knowing Dr. Mills, he’d probably prefer we didn’t make too much of a fuss – but this honor is incredibly well deserved.

Being recognized by St. Raphael Academy in Pawtucket, Rhode Island – a respected school with a long history and a strong sense of community – makes this moment all the more meaningful. To be welcomed into its Hall of Fame is not only a celebration of achievement, but also of the values, character, and leadership that continue to shape a person long after graduation.

In 2005, Dr. Rich Mills, a board-certified criticalist, set out to bring specialty veterinary care to Los Angeles, launching ACCESS Specialty Animal Hospital. As demand grew, so did ACCESS, expanding to the San Fernando Valley, South Bay, and eventually Pasadena and Royal Palm Beach, Florida, in 2021.

While the first three hospitals have since become part of a large corporate group, ACCESS Pasadena and ACCESS Palm Beach County remain proudly under Dr. Mills’ independent ownership. With his continued leadership, both hospitals reflect the same vision that started it all – providing advanced veterinary medicine, compassionate care, and a deep commitment to the pets, families, and primary care veterinarians who rely on them every day.

Dr. Mills, we’re proud of you, grateful for you, and honored to help carry your vision forward every day.

From all of us at ACCESS Pasadena and ACCESS Palm Beach County.

Congrats to Dr. Windy Leung, who recently completed the Los Angeles Marathon – her very first – after only five months of training! Phew!

It’s an impressive achievement, and a lovely reflection of the dedication, discipline, and perseverance she brings to everything she does as one of our wonderful Emergency Doctors at ACCESS Specialty Animal Hospital – Pasadena.

We’re proud to have Dr. Leung on the ACCESS Pasadena team – marathon finisher, emergency doctor, and clearly someone with more stamina than most of us. 🙂

Who says medical transfers can’t be stylish?

At ACCESS Specialty Animal Hospital – Pasadena, our specialty departments are spread across a small campus – which means some of our patients get to enjoy a little stroll between buildings. And what better way to travel than in your very own VIP stroller, complete with shade and comfort?

This cozy cruiser helps keep our sweet patients safe, calm, and out of the sun as they move between appointments. Just one of the many ways we go the extra mile to provide thoughtful, low-stress care – one roll at a time

Easter is a lovely time to slow down, enjoy good food, and spend time with family and friends – but it can also bring a few unexpected risks for pets.

Chocolate eggs, hot cross buns, candy, leftovers, and other Easter treats may be part of the fun for us, but some of them can be dangerous for dogs and cats. Chocolate, raisins, xylitol, cooked bones, and rich or fatty foods are just a few of the things that can quickly turn a festive weekend into a trip to the vet.

The good news is that a little extra care goes a long way. Keeping treats out of reach, asking guests not to feed pets from the table, and keeping an eye on curious noses can help everyone enjoy a safer Easter.

And if your pet does get into something they shouldn’t, it’s always better to act quickly. Contact your primary veterinarian or an emergency hospital as soon as possible.

Wishing you and your pets a safe, happy Easter filled with all the good things – and none of the emergency visits.

(…but, just in case, we’re open – 24/7 – this Easter weekend for Pet Emergencies.)

Today, on World Autism Awareness Day, we’re proud to show our support for autistic individuals, their families, and the wider community.

The ribbon featured here, with its colorful puzzle-piece design, is a widely recognized symbol of autism awareness and is meant to reflect the diversity and individuality of those on the autism spectrum. It serves as a reminder of the importance of understanding, acceptance, and inclusion.

From all of us at ACCESS Specialty Animal Hospital – Pasadena, we stand with those whose lives are touched by autism today and every day. 💙

A quick moment from our Interventional Radiology suite at ACCESS – Pasadena.

Here, one of our veterinary technicians, Ivan, is helping our cardiologist, Dr. Steve Cole, gown up before a procedure. It’s a simple step in the process, but also a good reminder of how much advanced veterinary care depends on an experienced team. From preparing the operating room and equipment to assisting with procedures and maintaining efficiency and sterility.

Our techs play a critical role in making these cases possible.

An important day…

Five years ago, in the middle of COVID, ACCESS Specialty Animal Hospital – Pasadena quietly opened its doors. It wasn’t the grand opening we imagined – no crowded open houses or ribbon cuttings – just a dedicated team of doctors, technicians, and support staff determined to build something meaningful during an incredibly challenging time.

While the world was in lockdown, pets still needed advanced care, and their families still needed support. So, we showed up.
Now, five years later, we’re grown into one of Southern California’s leading, doctor-owned specialty animal hospitals, and to celebrate, we did exactly what you’d expect from a hospital like ours: we hung balloons and banners, cut cake, shared stories – and of course, included our own four-legged family members (as seen in the photo) in the festivities.

Celebrations aside, we have always been, and will always be, grateful to our team, our referral partners, the community around us – and the families who continue to trust us with their pets’ care. Thank you for the support.

We’re proud of the foundation we’ve built – and even more excited for what lies ahead.

Happy Birthday to us! :-)

On any given day in the ER, we may have what’s known in the veterinary world as a “table case,” when our patients are never alone.

This is critical, important care – the kind where constant monitoring and steady hands matter.

Pictured here, at this little guy’s side, is Cheyanne, our ER Department Lead, watching, adjusting, reassuring, and only stepping away when another trained team member can step in.

It’s the quiet kind of teamwork at ACCESS Pasadena we take very seriously, because when a pet needs us most, someone is always there – day or night.
