THE ART OF DOING NOTHING 🐾

Not every training session needs to involve obedience drills, constant commands, or a million treats.

Sometimes the most productive thing you can do with your dog is absolutely nothing.

We spend so much time teaching dogs what TO do that we often forget to teach them how to just exist.

Not every person needs to be greeted. Not every dog needs to be approached. Not every new environment needs to be explored. And not every second of your dog’s day needs to be filled with entertainment.

For dogs who struggle with overarousal, frustration, or settling, learning to be neutral in different environments can be a huge part of their training.

That doesn’t mean forcing a stressed dog to lie down and calling it relaxation. We want dogs who are genuinely comfortable, not just physically still.

So yes, sometimes our training sessions involve sitting by a pond, hanging out at the park, or lying on the floor at Lowe’s while I use the bathroom. 😂

Because a dog who knows how to do nothing is a dog who can do a whole lot more with you.

My handsome guy Mako is growing into the most perfect example of what the Dobermann should be 😍 Aloof with strangers, velcro with his family, on when it’s time to work and play, and a couch potato when it’s time to relax. His obedience is near perfect at just under 8 months old and I couldn’t be more proud of his family for all of the work they put in with him daily.

Please do not take your working breeds to trainers who are absolutely clueless on how to work with them and have never owned nor competed with any. These breeds need a very specific approach to be successful in the home. At PLAY! we pride ourselves on our approach with these high energy and high drive dogs. It’s graduation day for Mac and Luna! 🎓🎉

These two officially completed their last day of the day train program today with Trainer Emily, and we couldn’t be more proud of how far they’ve come!

Both of these pups put in the work, and their families have been just as committed to the process. Training doesn’t stop at graduation, but these two have an awesome foundation to keep building on! We’ll miss you both!!

Mac and Malibu (the best sibling duo!) are putting in the work through our day train program with Trainer Emily!

Over the past several weeks, these two have been working consistently on obedience, leash manners, confidence, impulse control, PLAY!, real world distractions, and creating better everyday habits. Our Day Train Program gives dogs structured, hands on training a couple times a week while allowing them to go home each day with their family to work with them until they return next!

Alfie is freshly groomed and ready to head home today after his four week Board and Train. He completed his Puppy Bootcamp program a few months ago when he was just a little man and his family was so impressed that they brought his sister Amara back for the same program and Alfie for The Advanced. This dude is an absolute dream to train and we’re pleased to announce Alfie has full off-leash obedience and control at just one year old! Congratulations Alfie!

One of the most overlooked tools in dog training is something your dog already loves doing. PLAY!

We’re not talking about mindlessly throwing a ball for an hour or letting your dog run around until they’re exhausted. We’re talking about intentional, structured play that fulfills your dog’s natural drives while building motivation, confidence, impulse control and a better relationship with YOU.

Play is one of my favorite ways to build engagement and make training genuinely rewarding. When your dog sees you as more than just the person giving commands, you open up a whole new level of communication.

And remember, every dog plays differently! Find what motivates YOUR dog and use it to your advantage.
