Welcome to the team, Dr. Shannen Auffarth 🐾

Dr. Shannen Auffarth grew up in Baltimore, MD, where her passion for animals began. She earned her Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science from the University of Maryland, followed by her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine and Master of Public Health degrees from the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine.

Her professional interests include surgery, behavior, and preventive medicine.

Outside of work, she enjoys volunteering, spending time with her dog, Willie, and visiting the National Aquarium, along with the beach, traveling with her fiancé, and spending time with family and friends.

While we all look forward to celebrating Independence Day, the loud noises and fireworks can be frightening for many pets. Planning ahead can make all the difference in helping them stay calm, comfortable, and safe.

If your pet takes medication for noise anxiety, or if you need a refill, please don't wait until July 3rd to request it. Prescription refill requests typically require 24–48 hours to process, and our team wants to make sure your pet has everything they need before the holiday.

Please note: Our hospital will be closed on Saturday, July 4th, in observance of the holiday.

Here are a few tips to help keep your pet safe:
Keep pets indoors in a quiet, secure room.
Close windows, blinds, and curtains to help reduce noise.
Play calming music or white noise to help mask fireworks.
Make sure collars and ID tags are up to date in case your pet becomes frightened and escapes.

Request prescription refills early so you're prepared before the holiday.
