A beautiful little western rat snake (pantherophis obsoletus) to make your Thursday better! These guys are great climbers, and as the tale goes, if you have to wonder how the snake got there: it’s probably a rat snake!

Not our photo, but a great representation of the differences between a cottonmouth (water moccasin) and your average water snake.

Water snakes have bands vertically across their mouths, and have silly googly eyes 🤪

Cotton mouths have a vertical band across the eye that makes them look like they’re frowning all the time 😠

Are you worried about venomous snakes? The only venomous snakes in our area include rattle snakes, copperheads, and cotton mouths (water moccasins). If you come across any snakes and you aren’t sure, give us a holler and we will come take a look!

The weather is warming up! Just a reminder that, while many snakes brumate when it’s cold, they will come out when the weather warms up to find a food source.

Watch carefully when clearing leaves or working in garden beds—the little buggars can be sneaky!
